Shore Tope 10/07/19

Postby corkconian » Fri Jul 12, 2019 4:26 am

Date: 10/07/19
Tide: 2 hours down over low and 2 hours up
Rigs: 4ft penn pulley , 6/0 hooks, 200lb HL 100 RB
Bait: Fresh Mackerel

Arriving at the mark with some fresh mackerel in tow I had high hopes. Tides were small and the water had some colour to it, skies were overcast and wind was off my back. Conditions seemed perfect. Set up 2 rods both using pennel pulleys and baited them with ¾ of a mackerel (I like to take the tail section off) . Casting as far as i could I battled through the crabs to keep bait on the hooks. With fresh baits going out every 15 mins the tide started to slow down the drag was backed off to basically nothing. It wasnt long before the ratchet screamed off. The fish took a huge initial run , running straight as an arrow away from me. After some maneuvering around the second rods line the fish was landed. Got A quick photo and got it straight back in the water. Didnt want to keep it out long as it had put up such a good fight so didnt get a weight or measurement but estimate it at 35lbs. Delighted with the result. Its been my second fish from this mark with the previous one being smaller at 152cm(estiimated at 30lb) Fished the rest of the tide with no more fish but happy it has produced again.

I think most on here would love to catch a tope from the shire? I know I would. Looks like a nice venue too. Is it fairly flat and shallow there?

That is stunning. I'm home for a couple of weeks at the end of September and I'll definitely be trying for one from the east coast for a night or two.

It's actually quiet deep for how.close to shore it is . About 20 feet only a few yards out .

Nothing beats the screaming ratchets of the first run, cracking fish well done

I was planning to use pulleys with 150lb mono to a 6/0 or 8/0 pennel setup for them in September. Would that be sufficient do you reckon, or do you really need wire? I think I have 6/0 Sakuma Manta Extra and C&R Specimen Extra. Any preference on hooks?

I use a 6/0 mustad o Shughnassey bottom hook with either a C&R meat hook 6/0 or a C&R 8/0 circle ... The reason I use the mustard for bottom hook is I like to use the gemini splash down clip and it just fits and is still plenty strong ... If the meat hooks fit in the spash down I'd use them. ... I hate wire . I find it cuts the fish. .. I use 200lb hook length at about 3-4 feet on pulleys .

Yeah, I thought mono seemed a better plan myself. I'll have to tie up a few rigs and have a go! Might only get one or two outings at this so I'll have to see where's producing come late september or early october.
