lots of spots around south wexford

Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:17 pm

People: day 1 myself and corbyeire, days 2 and 3 myself and mark

Duration: 3 bloody days

Tide: 1 flood tide, 2 ebbs

Weather: mild, light rain, sunny days

Bait: peeler crab and rag

Rigs: pulleys, 2 hook clipped down

Results: NOTHING! oh actually one rockling

Report: Very embaressing report. Fished three days, drove 240 miles, tried 6 different locations without even a bite. Fished from Courtown, to Tinnaberna, St Helens, rostonstown, booley bay, and hook lighthouse. fished different states of the tides, covered as much ground as possible to locate feeding fish but nothing, not even a bite. Myself and mark got caught up in each others lines where i found a live rockling on the ground. he either feel off when i was untangling the mess or he simply jumped out f the water by himself. with the luck we had over the weekend, i thinking the latter ;)

All in all, it was great to get away and go camping for the weekend, but the fishing was seriously disappointing.

Had the same thing over here.. drove mayo to Dingle, 4days, 3 sessions a day, all tides, baits, beach/pier/ sorta rocks...>
- 3 flounder. as the saying goes if it was about catching, it'd be called Catching, not fishing.

It was disappointing but hasn't made me any less determined. Just might give it another month before organising any long distance trips.

The east coast beaches look pretty much unfishable this weekend. force 6 & 7, 40km+ easterlys. Just got worse ;)

Although it seems there is a window of about 6 hours friday midnight/saturday morning where it should drop down to force 5. is that fishable?

its always fishable ;)

you wouldnt know how accurate that window is, could be safer to avoid or head for an estuary

With them east gales forecast, it's probably better if you put the feet up and watch a few fishing dvd's with a few tins!

And do a bit of homework on where to fish and for what, save time and energy by going to specific locations for what's actually there.
Black Wraps are a great bait for the east coast this time of the year too and Id have those instead of rag anytime, scale down you're gear to small hooks too and small baits and things should improve drastically!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I don't like making excuses for a bad result, but i'm wondering if it was a bad judgement on the bait choice. We had nothing but Peeler crab for the three days. Corbyeire said he spoke to two guys next peg down from us who had a few small fish. I'd nearly bet it was lug they where using..

Your suggestion on scaling things down for the moment is good advice too. Might try find a sheltered beach this weekend and do a bit of scratching. i'd be deighted with a few whiting, pouting, even a weever at this stage ;)

Dodger, Shane & the ridge lads cleaned up on a Sth Wexford beach on Sunday using lug tipped with mac/squid. Crab’s a better bait for the bigger fish (which are few & far between at present), but always have a packet of wraps & mac with ye.

I'm thinking of doing a bit of fishing while camping in that area for a few days too shorty.
Just wondering what camp site did you pitch your tents in?
What was the cost per night and what kind of facilities were on offer?

I usually fish until up until pretty early in the morning, so i usually just bring a pop up tent and set up somewhere near the car, off the beaten track or on the beach itself.

Actually its worth mentioning i purchased army surplus camp beds which are brilliant. I thought i was only buying one, but four came in the post so i have two spares if anyone wants them. a few euro and i'd be happy. they are very strong, good solid steel and the canvas is pretty strong too.
