Hi SC,

Oh and for info, not exactly a shore mack report but will pertain to shore macks.

Was out in charter from Courtmac last Sunday week (the 17th). We had to go way way out into the harbour, pretty much out to the seven heads to catch just a few macks for bait for the day, there were no inshore macks. Skipper said he had never had so much trouble catching mackerel in June. Has the exceptionally cool weather made the water temperatures too low for macks to come inshore?

I'd say it's more to do with the super trawlers hoovering up the west coast macks during the winter,as regards to water temps the Irish sea is the coolest water on average and were getting a few in dublin

Plenty of macs off the rocks in howth today, ridiculous amount of bashers won't be heading back it's just not worth the stress

Lads is Dun laoghaire any good for float fishing inside the harbour. It defo works in Skerries but as Eoghan has mentioned the place is fairly jammers so I generally don't bother. Love float fishing for them and Dun Laoghaire seems big enough. Inside the last bit of the west pier maybe? I'll give it a shot sometime but just being lazy and wondering is it any good!

its very slow on the float there but yes they can be got there, its great fun on the float but in my experience you could be waiting half the day for 1

Cheers Ste. So much more fun than the feathers. Might try a decent spinner. Kilty or German Spratt maybe. The German Spratt always looks too big to me. Like it would frighten the life out of a mackerel!

Forget North Clare for the next few days, masses of weed at all distances. Picking it up every cast. Still mackerel around but it needs a few calm days to bring them close in.

It can be very good in DL with the float. Alot of the time people fish to shallow. I always found them down about 12 foot no less. also if you get one just cut the belly out of it into strips it will stay on the hook for ages very tough when fresh. 10 to 12lb bs is enough to. They can actually be fusy in the harbour and never seen many been caught on spinner or feathers inside. Another great method is just a line a hook and a fresh strip of mackeral. Swirl the strip around your head and launch it out and let it sink freely. Then when you see the line straighten just pull into it great fun and has caught me thousands of them down there. The steps up from the bandstand are the best areas for this with the second steps my favourite.

Hi Paul, if you want the place to yourself and you are determined to catch a few macks then check the early morning tide times and turn up at your chosen spot, I guarantee you'll have all the room you want. Plenty light at 4AM along the west coast, dawn breaking well before that.

That's great Tommy thanks. The bandstand is the east pier yeah? I think ill try using 20 lb braid line I have. I have 10 lb mono on another reel but the combined weight of the float and weight has resulted in a few snap off for me! maybe a lighter float would be better. thanks for the reply
