greystones 25-09-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:4-9pm

Tide:high at 5pm approx

Weather:flat calm, mild evening

Bait:rageen beag, mack, squid

Rigs:2 hook flappers and mini rigs

Results:dabs, whiting, pollock, coalies, long spined sea scorpion, blennies, corkwing wrasse, doggies

Report:After watching a documentary about two teenagers who lost both legs and one arm in Afghanistan during the week I decided that my own dodgy knee wasnt that bad after all and that i might just be able to hobble down to the rocks in Greystones for a few hours fishing  . Hadnt been out in over a week and I could feel the excitement coursing through me as I came over the hill from Bray and saw the blue sea in front of me. At this stage I always start wondering if there'll be room at the rocks ,who'll be there , etc, etc, so I was surprised to see I had it all to myself. Thats the great advantage of finishing at 2pm on Fridays, you can get there early. I set up the usual 2 rods, I at distance in the hope of a decent flattie on this calm day, and the other rod at my feet for wrasse etc, and I wouldnt say no to the odd stray bass  . The distance rod was the first to produce,,,,,,,a small dab on rag, he gave a decent bite for a small 'un  . Then I got some small pollock and wrasse on the small rod , before getting some better size coalies (still small though, but getting bigger!!). It was already looking like a good evenings fishing.I was in a tee-shirt till dusk, not bad for late September  . I got talking to a guy who was taking some photos and it turned out we went to the same school. a year apart, and knew the same people etc,,,,,its a small world  . He had some serious cameras and took some shots of me fishing, he said he'd email me some so heres hoping. Just as i told him that the bigger pollock (bigger for here i mean  ) usually come around at dusk, i got a bite and sure enough there was one on the end of the line. Had a little battle with a coalie who stripped the bait 3 times before i got him  .I noticed that as the tide dropped the blennies come out and i landed a couple of these, along with one of the smallest long spined sea scorpions ive ever landed   . Thats what i love about the place, when its good, its good  .I wasnt counting but there mustve been 20 plus fish landed, not bad for a calm day in September. I lost a few fish too, a codling fell off just as i landed him, then i lost 2 wrasse the same way  , also lost 2 traces. When it got dark, i put out some mack at distance for a doggie ,,,and was rewarded with a doggie and whiting double, great scrap, and a good haul up the rocks to test my gear. Another cast and another doggie, then followed by another whiting so at this stage and before the rats started to clean up my fishing area I decided to pack up and hit the road.

Nice fishing Dave, well done. :D
K2 and I have fished down there a few years ago now. We fished off rocks approx. 200 yards to the right of the pier in front of a hotel/nightclub at Greystones and caught loads of whiting and doggies.
I'll never forget that night, the place was haunted. I'll not go into why, if you want to know further info I'll Pm you about it.
Tight lines
