making pirks - tips and tricks?

#1 Post by thirty »

lads, im going to start making a few pirks for a wreck fishing trip in the next couple of weeks, i have the gear - lead, chrome bar, the gear for melting and pouring the lead - any hints or tricks out there for making pirks?

also what weight should i be making them, going to be fishing in 100meters of water in neap tides?

also are there any of the big well know DIY shops doing split rings? i need big split rings and the local fishing shops only have small rings

Cut the angles in the top and bottom of the chrome tube before you pour the lead. (Obvious, but you'd be surprised).

Stand the tube in a bucket of hard compacted sand when you're pouring the lead - stops the lead running out the bottom of the tube. Get it so there's enough of a plug of sand in the bottom of the tube to do this.

Don't hold the tube in your hand when you're pouring - use tongs/grips!

Maybe a cobbler/key cutters might have large split rings that would suit.
