Bass angling on RTE1

Next thursday (29th) Ear To The Ground are featuring a peice about Irish bass angling and the commercial sectors efforts to have the law changed. It will be on RTE1 at 8.30pm and will be the second item featured on the show. Try to get to see it if you can. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the subject.
While I supplied them with some backround material I was unable to get on the show. It will however feature JimH and Dr Ed Fahy, both of whom made some very strong arguments for sea anglers according to the researcher that I spoke to today.

Well done Jim & Ed, put across "our" argument very well.

As an observation, the commercials seem to have a very well oiled PR & lobbying stance, where "we" have Jim, John & other dedicated individuals fighting our corner at every turn.

In addition the tag line where accusations of other EU fishing fleets exploiting "Irish" bass are being bandied about on twitter etc. are stoking up public opinion in favour of re-opening the fishery. Is there any scientific evidence to back up this fishery?

why cant we stop these french,british,spanish boats fishing for our bass,,,are they landing these in irish ports etc,we are recognized as the only country to have commercial fishing banned but realistically we are not if these boats are landing them,we own these waters so we know who is the boss

Hi guys,
I have spent a lot of time researching and studying all information relating to commercial bass catches all around Ireland. There are two sources of information available-scientific studies and catch data. As mentioned in a previous post the Marine Institute with its two modern research vessels has only ever caught 60 bass in offshore waters in the Celtic Sea in the last 15 years. Contrary to what has previously been posted this data is up to date as of the end of last year.
I have studied detailed catch statistics from ICES(EU body responsible for data colection and scientific advice) and CEFAS (UK data collection).
Uk trawlers do not catch bass in the Celtic Sea. This astounded me but this is what CEFAS stats show and they are very detailed. The French boats do catch very small amounts but given that the Celtic Sea reaches most of the way down to France it it not supprising that the occasionally catch a few. Nobody is catching bass in any numbers in the Celtic Sea except of course the Irish and in theory they should be avoiding them. Go figure!!

Be prepared for the ‘poor us’ story as the commercial spin machine of ‘what we as fishermen are denied and entitled to whilst others get their hands on them’ ratchets into place. The sympathy vote from the public caught up in a fog of misrepresentation and pseudo heartfelt hardship – we've been here before remember, ask why have we found it necessary as a nation to protect the species in the first instance? – Simply because they were commercially fished to near extinction prior to 1989. Not managed, not sustainably exploited, with no long-term investment. Gone. And all the benefits with them.

The commercial lobby are prob feeling pretty good about the show. Perhaps it's too much to ask but you would think that as the bodies charged with promoting Irish angling abroad IFI or Tourism Ireland could have provided a spokesperson for the prog.

Well done Jim H etc for going on camera (which isn't easy) and doing a good job for both anglers and Irish tourism.

The commercial side really seemed to put across the point of Bass bycatch and discarding usable fish.. Is this really that common with bottom trawling for cod and haddock? i'd doubt it! I'm sure this happens occasionaly on the way up or down.. but the commercial side really milked this. Well said Jim H, and also Dr Fahy said some good words, in the end i think the feeling i got from the programme was that commercial fishing was not sustainable. Lets hope it stays as it is.

off the wall hasnt got his ear to the ground,from what i gathered is that Irish fishermen have no quota to fish for bass in IRISH waters but the rest of Europe has free reign on all our waters. **** EUROPE AND ENDA KENNY SWINGING OUT OF ANGELA MERKELS FLAPS , lets go back to neutral Ireland. Greenest fields, best of coasts and Cities that will attract the rest of the world.We're the hub of Europe and we're getting spit roasted...Got that off me chest Im going fishin 2moro cant wait !!!!
