Sports Council funding....

Sun Feb 05, 2012 9:00 pm

I would like every angler on this site to go onto this page on the Sports Council of Ireland which lists out all the sports that they fund, and the amounts given in core funding.

http://www.irishsportscouncil.ie/Govern ... nvestment/

Angling, which is splint into 5 different governing bodies, gets 15000eu which equates to 3000 each.
Now I'm not going to go into the specifics of what every other sport gets, but lets just say that Baton twirling gets 13,849eu  , and orienteering gets just under 48,000eu

If you are as sickened by this state of affairs as I am, please click on this link and send them a question asking them to explain the reasoning behind this.....

http://www.irishsportscouncil.ie/contact.aspx

I have below copied the message I wrote as something you could copy and paste or write something like it.

"I was just wondering why the largest actual participation sport in this country, where approx 20 teams are sent to home international and world events each year gets a core funding of 15,000eu which is divided between the 5 different angling bodies in this country ie: 3000eu each when an incredibly niche sport like baton twirling gets almost 14000eu, and a very small participation sport like Orienteering gets just under 48,000eu.
I would appreciate if someone could come back to me and explain this.
Yours in sport
David Jolly"

I would love to see if this appalling state of affairs could be changed.

What do people think...

Btw try not to shout out loud at your computer screen when you see some of the amounts given to things like AMERICAN FOOTBALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a disgrace that our Government can give money to some of these sports while our brave anglers going to far off foreign shores have to scrimp, save, beg and borrow to participate.Well done Davy for highlighting this. We should all take it up with our local politicos.

It sucks to wear the Irish flag and get no recognition from the Irish government.

Despite that I think you are very lucky to get anything at all!!!

I have represented Ireland at my martial art for the last 6 years at a cost of about 3k on average (althought the worlds in Brazil was fairly more than the rest) my wife was also up there twice wearing the Irish flag but we just couldn't continue to keep forking out each year.

I am going to the worlds this year in Italy, and I honestly think this will be my last... not cause I am not at my peak (getting super results and and won the nationals this year in individuals and team :) ) or fit, but just comes down to the annual cash investment...

To be honest I feel crap about it, but there are full time professional athletes that are on a crap stipend of 18K per annum... the likes of dervala o rourke etc. they have to emigrate from Ireland as we do not have the facilities, find accommodation, food transport, training fee's and transport to competitions and they must achieve rankings all from pittance from the Irish sports council. At least I have a job that has ok cash and I have no pressure to compete monthly!

As you are finding out, the Irish sports council is not so much about competing and representing our country... but its mandate is focused on social inclusion and getting kids up and active...
This is why you are seeing such odd funding... frankly its the same reason that five a side soccer does not get funding... its mostly played by middle age men ;)

If you get a kids team competing internationally and getting out and active regularly then you will see your club get funding....

I'm gonna stop here... I aint even going to talk about funding for local clubs let alone internationals... welcome to my world!! And good luck!

I hear You Donny You should have taken up baton twirling instead of Martial arts..., but with the youth and junior teams that are sent away for angling, I would have thought that would have helped with the funding, and btw that 15k is not divided equally by the sports council, certain disciplines get a majority..
Thanks to everyone who is sending off their requests.
Dave

I have perused the whole sports council funding website and it struck me that its hard to be taken seriously when your website listing is "under construction". The only other sport that has no website is horseshoe pitching and they are just ranked below us in funding, near the bottom. The P.R. man in the angling community needs to wake up and smell the greenbacks :?: :?: :?:

I had a quick look to see if I could find criteria for funding. I came across one comment on the shooting forum on boards.ie
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthre ... 322&page=3
. Grant aid is not supplied on the basis that you are an NGB and entitled to it but on the basis of the programmes that the NGB has developed and which require the funding in the first place. 5-year strategic plans, yearly operational plans and evidence of strong corporate governance are pre-requisites for the applications.

Just asking for money for the sake of it will get a blank response.

Getting grant aid for any kind of angling-related activity is a massive migraine - the hoops you have to jump through are legion. Rightly so, because it's public money that's being dispensed and we all know that's in short supply these days.

They (whoever they are, as the funding body - National Lottery, Local Development, County Council, whoever) set their stall out as regards their requirments. It's then up to the applicant to comply.

Perhaps it would be more productive to ask the hard questions of the representative angling bodies as to why angling is at the back of the funding queue?

If funding is given to "angling" rather to specific angling organisations does the Angling Council have a role here?
http://www.anglingcouncilireland.ie
Is it they apply for funding for "angling"? Is it they who disburse the money?

Yes - they are the recognised National Governing Body

You hit the nail on the head Tanglerat, angling is at the back of the queue because it doesn't shout loud enough, and that is down to the representative bodies.

Anyway, what is it with the Irish and funding, why when we do anything does it have to be top of the priority list. It's no wonder so many projects go off half cocked, we're focusing on where we can scrounge money from as against channelling energy into creating it.

Migraine is an understatement and a mis diagnosis - the day I spent yesterday and the level of frustration I experienced in 'angling politics' forces me to the point of resignation and continued dissapointment. I'm not looking for much in fact I'm willing to pay for something but heh how many barriers suddenly appear to prevent you getting there - arrogant ignorant people in all the wrong places.

I will write about this - 'Keep a diary, one day it may keep you'
