I had a call from E.R.F.B. this morning they are definately making a submission on the matter, they would like all sea angling clubs to do the same.

Interesting ... DLRCoCo have themselves run angling activities for communities in the county:

“To ask the Manager what summer ‘sport’ projects the Council will be organising within this ward?”



Reply:

The Sports Development Office are presently co-ordinating a variety of summer sporting activities for the whole County. At this juncture, the activities are being matched with the most appropriate communities, based on numbers and age groups of children and teenagers living in the areas, planned Summer project activities for these areas etc.

Although it will not be possible due to limited resources to deliver each of these individual programmes to each community throughout the County, the range of summer activities which will be on offer include:

Soccer blitz in the community
Rowing Camp
Power Boating
Futsal
Rugby
Basketball
Angling
Tennis
Multi Sports Camps etc.

A number of other activities will be available to the communities in the Glencullen Ward including Angling, Power Boating, and Snorkelling etc.”

Hi all,

Just to let you know, I have been in touch with the County Manager for DLR and we will arrange a meeting soon. I

will be sending a letter on behalf of Leinster IFSA after a meeting with the Hon Sec Gerry Knight to agree the

wording. ERFB have written to me outlining the fact that they want me to get in touch with all clubs asking them to

write and object to the proposals. This will be done. I will also be in contact with CFB on the subject as well as

EFSA and John Treacy of the Sports Council. When we have drafted our letter I will post a copy. I intend going on

the same lines as previously in relation to the high rock at portmarnock where there was agreement to work together.

Please keep all your letters to relevant persons to the point, please don't rant. There is a meeting of the Angling

Council shortly and I will raise the issue there as well. Regards, Tom Lillis

BTW we would encourage all anglers, particularly those in the DLR CoCo area, to write letters to DLR Councillors (addresses above).

Donogh outlined a few different points that you could cover. I don't think we will do a template, as letters are more effective if written in your own words

The arguments are fairly clear, but some of the ones that would work best are probably the following:
1)This is utterly unnecessary, there is almost no real conflict between swimmers and anglers.
2) There have been no serious accidents or incidents between swimmers and anglers
3) Anglers tend to use the beaches most at times when there is little or no swimming
4) Where there are demonstrable difficulties, angers would be quite happy to restrict their use of the beach at particular times in particular places, the problem is with a blanket ban, and only designated exceptions to that ban
5) This is an issue of personal freedom
6) Anglers are passionate about anging and will vote on that basis, few swimmers have any problem with anglers and a ban like this will not gain any votes
5) Sea-angling is becoming a major tourist activity

As someone who's fished off Killiney Beach since I was a kid, I'm appalled with what the council are doing. The coastline is an amenity to be enjoyed by everyone - not just one group to the exclusion of others.

As the secretary of the Ballybrack / Loughlinstown branch of Fianna Fáil I'll raise my objections with our local councillors Barry Conway and Cormac Devlin and will get back to you with an update. In the meantime I'd be obliged if you could let me know of any meetings you are planning.

Local politicians and councillors have expressed dismay and confusion at the proposal, which was first made public by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council on August 20th.

Dublin North-East Fianna Fáil Senator Martin Brady has called on the council to scrap its proposal.

In conversation with 'Denis', who was looking for contact details - think he talked to JD - he said that the IT was looking for "an angry angler". I explained that this was not the face that we wanted to present but he said that the IT was specifically looking for this as it would add a bit of colour... damned if you do, damned if you don't! It just goes to show how hard it is to get past perceived stereotypes (still in place from the rod licence war many years ago I reckon). Another reason for us to be extremely careful and make sure to present ourselves as very reasonable and conciliatory...

When you're writing to councillors, ministers, etc. about this, don't forget to send your written submission to the council executives as well!!!

It help to draw up an e-mail petition and send it round to other fellow anglers, this would help this issue spread further than anglers on this forum.

I sent a letter to DLRCoCo today from Germany in my name and in the name of seven other regular visitors to Ireland who come to Ireland for the sole reason of sea angling which yet is among the finest in Europe.

I reminded them of the fact that tourism will be Irelands largest industry in the future, with the Celtic Tiger already looking more like a pussy cat than anything else.

I'd be surprised if they answered but if they do, I'll scan it and bring it online.
