A quick summary of the comments made by some of the councillors:

Donal Marren asked whether the offer of consultation by IFSA was taken up by the council.

Niamh Breathneach was surprised that an ammendment (I think she was referring to the daytime/summer months ammendment) was removed from the draft.

Carrie Smyth asked whether the council had consulted with the angling organisations.

Cormac Devlin said the council needed to be practical and look at other what other councils were doing. I gathered he was not in favour of the ban as it appeared in the current proposal.

Lettie McCarthy said she would like the council to meet with anglers. She described us as a "mild" group of people and mentioned that we wouldn't want to be fishing where people are swimming and making noise anyway. She was generally seemed to be not in favour of the ban as proposed but also raised the issue of discarded hooks as something that might be addressed. She reiterated the need to consult with anglers.

Cathaoirleach Denis O'Callaghan said he could not see why angling needed to be banned all year round. Mentioned that angling is a huge participation sport and drew attention to the Dublin Angling Initiative. He commented that most angling took place at night. He said that there were difficulties between swimmers and anglers that needed to be resolved and that there was a need for further consultation.

Charles MacNamara (Director of Culture, Development and Arts??) commented that the bye-laws were an attempt to control use of the beaches by a diverse range of users (he listed them) and that the councillors needed to bear that in mind.

Overall, I would say the tone of the meeting was favourable towards anglers. The main point that arose was that there needed to be a lot more consultation and work done on this before it is brought back to the council.

So, who's going to represent the anglers in meetings with the council?

IFSA obviously perhaps, but I nominate Teacher and/or jd to rep all the anglers on SAI. It's time we all have a voice in there.

we should get on to other forums across europe and get the clubs to send in written submissions saying that if the ban comes in forgien sea angling clubs will boycott ireland for future comps

Message from Councillor Carrie Smyth - got last night:

".... at the Council meeting this evening it was agreed to refer the above issue back to both the Dundrum and Dun Laoghaire Area Committee Meetings for further discussion. Charles Mac Namara, Director of Services, Cultural Community Development and Amenities also agreed to contact the various interest groups."

Not too sure how much sea angling goes on the Dundrum area, but there you go....

strategically, it would be good for anglers to reach out to swimmers, as a whole by proposing an "Swimmers" day at the forty-foot, beaches etc whereby the angling orgs would turn and show people what responsible angling is about, throw in some casting lessons, tackle advice, etc. Might even get a few converts too ...

Many thanks to all who went to the trouble of writing to, emailing or ringing counselors. I have had many emails from Counselors letting me know of outcome. The Cathaoirleach Denis O' Callaghan rang me to advise on outcome. He said the meeting would be on a web cast on the DLRCoCo web site later today. Well done again to all, People Power does work.

I have now spoken to the Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Councillor Denis O’Callaghan who informs me that this matter was discussed at last nights Council meeting. He was successful in getting agreement from the other members of the Council to defer a decision on the issue and to have the Council Officials

1. Re-engage with the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers
2. That maps be made available to members to show exact measurements of beach area etc.
3. That Area Committees of the Council further discuss the draft Bye Laws before it comes back to a full Council meeting for decision.

Councillor O'Callaghan has agreed to keep me informed of developments on this issue.

Those exclusion zones seem fair enough. You wouldn't want to fish those areas anyway apart from killiney and only then at times when swimmers weren't around. If the ban was restricted to certain hours and months it seems fair considering the amount of unrestricted marks left. The question is whether they are only the first step in a series of exclusion zones.

I had the good fortune of seeing this argument from the other side on sunday. While lying on greystones beach catching a few rays, I got hooked in the back by a discarded/lost rig. The rig was lodged in something so as I sat up from the initial pain the hook pulled a nice 4 " track down me back. I know you're more likely to suffer an injury from junk left on the beach but it certainly made me re-think this issue considering i had the wee'un with me ;)
