i was told that it easier keep bigger tanks,my one is only 10 gallon and having no problems so far,if you live near salt water it makes life easier,i was told to change about 20% of the water every month and to make sure that the air pump and filter are suitable for the size of the tank,at the moment i do a full change every week its a excuse to get out fishing as well
when changing the water let the new water get to room temperature first,if there is a difference of 2c it could kill the fish
don't over stock the tank
some species will eat the others so a bit of care is needed when stocking,sea scorpions look lovely but will eat everything in the tank
when feeding avoid oily fish as they will color the water

few more tips i discovered
i dug some lug and white rag and put the air line in the bucket with them and it kept them great

i was told that if you put crab in a tank and put a heater in the tank that after a few days the crab will start to peel

cheers for the tips. I will give it a try. quite a few brittle stars around my way reckon they would look great in a tank. i remember fishing down the rocks in howth harbour watching a scorpion fish trying to eat my 3oz lead as i jigged it up and down!

very cool fish. one of those ones that many people will probably never encounter in their lives.. unless in an aquarium
can only imagine that they are near impossible to catch on rod and line - due to their habitat and elusiveness. maybe the lrf fishermen targeting mini species have the best chance..

but yeah, how have you found all the fish surviving all this time then..?
and what on earth is that blue one in there?!

i started with a 34l tank

i got the 80l last week and wasn't going to set it up yet because it had no light bulb but then the brain got working and i converted it to led lights
it is a bit plain yet but i have a few ideas to make a background
at the moment i have dogfish,two spot goby,common blenny,butterfish,pipefish,rock goby,corkwing wrasse,topknot,Fifteen-spine Stickleback,mullet,Sand Goby,Montagu's Blenny,Three-spined Stickleback,tadpole fish,painted goby,ballan wrasse,cling fish,crab,squat lobster,shrimp,star fish and snails in the tank

most of the fish are surviving well i have lost a few from other fish eating them same as what would happen in the wild
if its the blue fish in the top left in the last photo its a mullet,must be the way the light hit him

theres a few fish extra in those thanks than i'd be comfortable with tbh, but thats just me. some skinny lookin fellas too?!

FWIW: i'd be keener on a larger tank with a good range of small creatures - like shrimp, crabs, blenny, starfish, anemone, etc etc, with only a few mid water fish.
really looking forward to setting it up now. the nephews and nieces will love it!
and i reckon that i will set it up for over the Summer months only (as this is really the only time that i will get regular access to the sea).. i'll let 'em all go afterwards

We went out rock pooling yesterday and today
Lots of fish starting to move back in after the winter

i think it was a male but not sure i will ask the friend later when we go rock pooling again,the friend did have a look around to see if there were any eggs and i read that the male guards the eggs
it would have been around 30+cm

Just back from more rock pooling,I got some lovely tube worm as a background for the tank and we also got 2 types of clingfish and some gold shinny wrasse
Plus I found a lovely spot to fish as well

Funny, was rock-pooling myself too today. We got 4 clingfish, a big rock goby, found some tiny mullet, and found a range of different types of crabs - one that I had never seen, or heard of, before.
A few pics:
(will have to get the name of that bigger crab again..)
