Dunlaoghaire-Rathdown restrict angling to designated areas??

jd is there anything that can be done on a public level right now, what would you suggest? How long is the consultation period? Are we maybe missing the boat with regard to an organised and strong letter writing response?
A bit of direction would be nice as all the meaty bits are happening per PM at the moment so it'd be nice to have something actionable for the general public.
Is there someone spearheading an effort? If so what do they suggest?

Do you advise putting together a letter and making my own thoughts known on the issue or would my effort be better spent waiting on someone else to make it concerted?

I hope I've posed some of the questions that others would have at the moment, I'm prepared to get as active as I can on this issue , or at least as active as I possibly can with my first child on the way.

A copy of the draft Beach Bye Laws 2007 will be available for public inspection at the Culture, Community Development & Amenities Department, County Hall,Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire and Dundrum Office, Dundrum Office Park, Main Street, Dundrum between the hours of 9.30am to 12.30pm and 2.15pm to 4.30pm Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays, for a period of one month commencing 20th August 2007.

The Council will consider any submission in relation to the draft Amended Beach Bye Laws 2007 submitted, in writing to: Senior Executive Officer, Culture, Community Development & Amenities Department, Level 3, County Hall, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire before noon on Friday 28th September, 2007.County Hall, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland .

The councillors have to vote on and adopt the bye-laws.

Keep it short, polite and to the point. Register your opposition to/disgust with the proposed bye laws that would restrict angling, and ask them not to vote it into law.

I think it's been said already in this thread, get to whoever you can.

I sent my email to Seamus Brennan with the subject Threat to Tourist Industry as this is an attention grabber.

I agree with Tanglerat that snailmail is probably better than email, but it all will count.

For my two cents worth, I would suggest that instead of a bald condemnation of what is proposed, we try to bring these people into dialogue: Tell them what is wrong with the proposal, tell them why it's wrong and ask for their input/assistance.

We also need to give any and all feedback received, either here or on to one or two people who can take the time to run with this when it's needed.

Just a thought ... if someone has time and wants to volunteer, it might be worthwhile digging out all the shore/boat reports from the forum covering the DLR coastline. I'm sure there have been a few bass taken over the years ;) And some good sessions at Killiney. Recent reports from White Rock spring to mind. Anything that shows the value of fishing this coastline.

Reports from the Winter months would be particularly interesting, as the council may be taking a narrow view of people filling the beaches between June and September, forgetting about the rest of the year ...

Lads, I have a fair bit of professional of expertise in how these things work, and I would very strongly advise you not to wait until there is a concrete proposal until you start making objections. If you wait until then, for you to have success will mean that someone (whether at Management or political level) will have to back down. The key to a campaign like this is 'kill it before it has life at all'.
It would also seem like the power in a situation would rest with the Councillors on the appropriate committee or sub-committee, who I think, would have approve any managment proposals. (Even if it is a management function, I think the councillors would be able to overturn it) So each councillor should be approached by as many anglers as possible, and it should be clearly communicated to them that there are a lot of votes in this.
The arguments are fairly clear, but some of the ones that would work best are probably the following:
1)This is utterly unnecessary, there is almost no real conflict between swimmers and anglers.
2) There have been no serious accidents or incidents between swimmers and anglers
3) Anglers tend to use the beaches most at times when there is little or no swimming
4) Where there are demonstrable difficulties, angers would be quite happy to restrict their use of the beach at particular times in particular places, the problem is with a blanket ban, and only designated exceptions to that ban
5) This is an issue of personal freedom
6) Anglers are passionate about anging and will vote on that basis, few swimmers have any problem with anglers and a ban like this will not gain any votes
5) Sea-angling is becoming a major tourist activity

By the way, has the IFSA alerted all club secretaries in the affected areas yet? We need all the help we can get, and some clubs may not be aware of the situation yet.

Apart from the obvious arguments, we should also really stress that anglers are the only type of beach/coast user who tend to be constantly watching the water and as such tend to spot people in trouble (swimmers/surfers/sailors/kayakers/small boat users) long before anybody else.

Hi, lads, I rang the e.r.f.b. this morning asking if they had any views on the draft proposals of the DLRcoco on the usage of killiney beach,I was informed that the director was away on holiday at moment , but that they were aware of the proposals.I then asked if they intended taking any stance on the matter they said that the director would be back next week,and they would give a call.They then asked what date submissions had to be in by.I informed him that the date was the 28th sept.makes me think they have not even seen the draft.Inspires confidence in the fisheries boards does it not.
