DIY Lead Heads.

I have been messing about over the years making different kinds moulds,from all kinds of materials mainly heavy weights for the boat and shore,some ok some total crap
with a bit of time over the last couple of days i decided to try make something a little lighter. so locked in the shed for a couple of hours, i came up with a couple of lead head type moulds the bigger one comes in at a whopping 3oz and the smaller one is a nice little one that is roughly guessing about 25gram.a little bit of trimming has to be done with the castings but if i can get a few fish on something i made myself it will be well worth while im happy enough with the results at least i wont have to worry about loosing them any more :mrgreen:all i need to do now is paint a few and try them out

This is just a trial run declan i have a few ideas in mind, the ones above will be mainly used from my boat,the hooks i have used are 4/0's and 6/0's, what size hook is in your 7gram heads.

Howya John, I have used 7g ones with 4/0 hooks no problem but normally the 4/0s are on 14g or even 21 g heads, with the 7g I usually use the ones with a 1/0 or 2/0 size. Recently I have been using 7g articulated jig heads then hook size is normally 3/0 or 4/0 works well with senko types ,slug gos, waveworms xlayers etc.

The black and white head in the middle picture is articulated with a 6/0, I have a spot in cork that requires heavy heads and big hooks, i will be trying them out in a couple of weeks time
when i come up with light stuff i will post it here

They look sweet John any chance on a pm on what u made the mould from as I make my own grip leads and would love to do a bit of experimenting myself

Looking good John!
I would not worry too much about painting them. I couldn't say painting has increased catch rates. I think it's more to do with the lure than the head.

The "Guide techniques" on the left are well worth a look.

Been there done that a long time ago i used to carve and shape my own plugs out of cedar if i can find any old ones i will put a pic up, i remember catching a 6lb bass on one i had made on it's second cast

Thanks for the links martin, i think i will give powder coat a miss,i will just give them a dip in whatever paint is knocking about in the shed

They are looking nice John fair play the weight seems spot on for cork we used similar last week and had some cracking fish, the lighter 7 gram heads etc are very important but not for the fishing you mean:-) I use down to 3G from the shore and boat fishing slack back waters and of corse weightless but for the deep marks with tide or wind I'd say the 25g is bang on but Jim is the expert on that!

good man phil,im looking forward to trying them out to see what they work like.
in trying to fine tune the mould earlier on to cut back on the trimming i broke one section in half but all is not lost it was a clean break and i managed a good repair i will see how it goes tomorrow

I think jim is right we used plain led heads and done just as giid as coloured but I have a few tubs of powder coat if you want to experiment John, it's alot easier than paint with better results..I'll be putting them to use in the muglins over the next few weeks John the lured were out fishing crab for cod and wrasse!!
