specimen whitefish trip Union Hall wed 23rd Sept

Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:40 pm

As discussed already i've booked colin barnes' catamaran Holly Jo

http://www.whalewatchwithcolinbarnes.com/

for wed 23rd Sept to target specimen
cod, coalie, pollack, ling, conger etc on the wrecks

To attempt this type of fishing in deep water it needs light winds and no swell,
there's no point in trying it otherwise. The booking is for a spring tide which
experience has shown makes the fish feed better, though makes positioning of
the boat more tricky.

Please post in this thread if you are potentially interested or definately
coming

At this remove the weather looks about as good as it gets at these latitudes, fingers
crossed it stays that way. Funny time of year to have summer at when you'd
be expecting the equinoxial gales

I reckon we've had them already.

I spoke to Colin, it looks like the breeze will be light for wednesday but a very
strong spring tide so the boat will be swept along over the wrecks very quickly,

at slack water it will still be possible to position the boat

what do you want to do, please post here so this can be decided?

doesn't fill me with optimism, a strong tidal flow again   , wasn't this precisely the reason we were not able to get positioned above the wreck the last time? (not to speak from not reaching the seabed with 1lb lead  ) If that's the case we better postpone the trip or find us an alternative wreck, surely we would be disappointed if we arrive at the spot after a 3hr cruise and find us in the same situation as experienced before

I was reckoning that the second wreck we fished the last day would be worth a shot again. However, the tides would want to be between 3.4m and 3.6m. Maybe an inshore wreck might be worth a shot. The very first wreck we fished this year was about 12 miles off Seven Heads and we had a crackin' day that day. Mind you the tide was 3.6m.

personally id go if enough lads want to share the trip.

The tides will be down a good bit, the new moon was the 18th,
the winds are forecast very light, it would be a pity to waste a nice day,

there are so many unkowns about fishing for big whitefish on the wrecks,
but one known is we wont catch much sat in work or at home :-)

That's precisely the point John, predictions are changing by the hour momentarily so we will only be able to determine the exact conditions when we arrive there and be prepared to react accordingly. Pat has made some interesting suggestions which could be implemented as plan B if necessary.
I'm always up for a bit of an adventure, you know me

ive spoken to Colin and told him there is not enough interest to go ahead in view
of the strong tide, his boat is free for the early days next week, neap tides, if
anyone wanted to try then. I wont make that due to work.
