Hi all!
Remember last year I was so eager to get out in my newly purchased craft and chase the cod in cork harbour? I didn't have a whole pile of success because the conditions were pretty unsettled for most of last winter and a lot of fresh water coming down the estuary was pushing the fish out and lowering visability so much you really had to anchor to bring the fish to the bait.
This year, so far, the conditions have been cold and clear, indeed the visibility in the water last Sunday was better than any day I saw over the summer. This really helped the fishing I think and after setting off from Agheada our first drop in the outer harbour produced about 4 or 5 mackerel. Drifting over the same area a few times added a few more so we were good for bait and dinner with a few whiting thrown back also (boney little feckers !).
I kept intending to move and start a new drift but we kept catching fish so we just kept on drifting.... Eventually we moved and did a few spins over harbour rock which produced a cod of about 4lb. Not massive but our biggest of the day and I was well pleased. Got him on a Muppet/feather rig which I will be sticking up on as they really did the business before we left the only two sets we had stuck to the bottom of the sea...
So the overall tally was 8 cod and 20 or so mackerel. Pleanty of whiting too in from bouy 6 but I'm not a fan...
So there it is. Water clarity good and I'm sure there are bigger cod in there, it's just a matter of perseverance!
Tight lines and possibly another report next Sunday.

Good to get out there! Even in that east wind....
The overall size of cod so far this year is small. A 4lb fish would be big at the moment!

Hi lads!
Out again yesterday, dawn til 4. Slower than last week but found the cod eventually. We had 8 cod again to about 4lb, not as many mackerel as last week but all in all a reasonable if slightly rough session.

Fair play for getting the boat out at this time of year. With the short days and long tows there and back, I don't bother, even though I've been shore fishing on days recently when conditions were more boat friendly than during the summer!

I keep my craft at the sea John - which makes it way easier! Myself and the buddy are taking a long tow up to malin head for a few days over Christmas, up near the coastguard weather station. You fish up there at all? Any advice?

Out Saturday again, big swell with little or no chop so nice conditions. Unfortunately though, I could not find a fish. I tried all the usual spots in the harbour and a few south east of roches and the only thing I managed to snag was the remains of a small wreck which still has my Muppet rig attached to it...
Perhaps the cod have worked further in to the harbour, I dint know, but usually you'd hit a few pollock outside or over harbour rock. The only theory I have is that the change in air pressure during the week put them off the feed....
Theories anyone....?
