Report:The Lough Foyle SAC open boat comp was fished on Sunday 24th June from Greencastle harbour.
Two sessions, both at anchor, one inshore on the rough ground and one out on the sand and mixed broken ground.
There was a big tidal run in the area that we fished, being anchored in these conditions really high-lights how fast we must be covering the ground when we are drifting. All bar one on the boat were trying to fish down tide, I myself was using a 16oz lead and it was just getting carried off down tide like a kite! Despite this the fishing was still very good with Fred Mills from Millisle SAC landing some very good Spurdogs, the best of which was weighed on the boat at 15lb. There was a photo taken of the fish at the time hopefully we'll get a copy and stick it up later. Im told the specimen size is 12lb? That being the case there was quite a few above specimen size landed, and returned to fight another day. Whilst the rest of us struggled with big weights, and taking forever to wind in the fish, Corney devlin was launching gripper leads uptide, and landing doubles and trebles every time, Cod, dogs, whiting, ling, red and grey gurnard all taken using this uptide method. As he said himself afterwards fishing the fish-off three years in a row, yer bound to pick up something!
The other boat didn’t venture as far out as ourselves, and the catch was dominated by Whiting, Red and Grey Gurnard
The rough ground provided the usual sport with Pollock, Coalies and Ballan wrasse making up the bulk of the catch.
In total there was 15 species of fish caught.
Pollock, Coalie, Ballan, Red, Grey, Tub, Plaice, Dab, Cod, Ling, Dogs, Spurdog, Whiting, Weaver, and Scorpion.

Congratulation to the winner Corney Devlin he definitely taught us a lesson out on how to fish the sand at anchor during a big tide.
Thank you to all who supported the comp, and to the skippers for putting us on the fish!
The Top ten were as follows:

good job Paddy and well done organizing the comp.
My arms are sore today as we had no hauler on our boat and I seemed to be
the only one willing to pull in the anchor rope
Anchor fishing is a different experience alright and hopefully we will get another bash at it
