Been itching to get out and decided that the lull in the torrential rainfall since the previous Thursday was a sign so bolted out the house before I could be stopped!
Got down to the mark, bit of a walk from a dead end lane, to realise that I had forgotten the waders. Foreshore drops quite rapidly but its boulder and rocky ground with a heavy fringe of weed (akin to Rossansubble for those who know it) and clearly not having waders could be problematic.
Weather was slightly less pants than it had been for the previous week, light S to SW beeze, odd bit of drizzle, mostly dry.
Tide was running out (wops!) and boy was it running... turns out there is a sizable current in the channel which probably explains the depth.
Ended up using the big rod (triplex) in case I needed the reach over the weeds and put on a very long shock leader, so that I would be fishing with 60 lbs line running all the way from reel to baits. Felt it was the only way to be secure with the massive growth of weed in front of me... not to mention the rough ground.
Six ounce paternoster rigs with long write grips were getting tumbled along and collecting a bit of weed (not much) but simply could not hold bottom. Tried everything.
Ended up casting at 2 o'clock and keeping it relatively short to allow the current sweep the baits into the marginal weeds, ended up fishing at 5 o'clock from the point.
Lots of small nibbles which I assumed was crabs, or possibly whiting although I doubt they would like that current.
Eventually got some nods and brought in a procession of dogfish, 14 in the three hours down to near low water. Weather turned nasty and given I could see the squalls coming I decided to break it all down and head home. There might have been a few small bull huss in amongst them, as they were all very dark coloured and I can never remember which is which when you look at their noses! Not a sniff of a ray, probably too late and nothing bigger, but I will try it again around slack water.
Oddly I think it might perform better at lw than hw, with the possibility of better fishing resting up in the channel, waiting to move in with the tide...
Got home in time to watch Connacht lose by a point... no change there either!!!

Nice report, I find its better to blank on an unplanned trip than a planned one - you dont feel as bad - and I know you caught 14 DF - I hate them so much I still call it a blank! Still its nice to get out aint it
