The Past Couple of Weeks

Had got into a good habit of posting soon after my sessions but fallen off of late with the rigours of "Summer". Here's what fishing post-hounds has looked like:

Antrim Rocks 6/8

Returned to the scene of the last big pollack. Lovely night, slow fishing - far too much run on the mark to fish the lure effectively at range where the fish seem to hit. Still, 1 hit, 1 fish of 4lb 5oz so went home cock-a-hoop again in any case.

9/8 Donegal rocks

Lure fished my previously staple big pollack mark. Very slow to pick up this year. One decent pollack of 2lb on a lure, the rest of it was pin-pollack on sabikis and a PB giant launce of 29cm. Not a mack in the parish from what I can see after several attempts. It will kick off though and when it does, rods will be broken : )

10/8 Donegal rocks

Same spot but bait at distance over sand with mack and the fresh launce. Only 3 scourges to show. Tried bait here a few times now and although it looks the part, for me it isn't and its a lure only mark from now on.

13/8 Antrim pier

Fished 4 hrs up to HT with rag only at dist. Same old story in this neck, plenty of fish but pitiful in size. More pins than a sewing class with plaice, pollack, dabs, coalies, micro-codling and slugs. The rod kept tapping and I was busy for the most part at least.

14-16/8 Donegal

Different part of the county this time. Spent 3 days searching for deep water over sand. Fished 4 sessions in total.
First session was a range-finder with only 3 fish but PB dab (34cm, 1lb) amongst them. Also landed my first turbo and species #29 of the season.

2nd sesh we returned to a spot we'd done well at not 2 months back. Heard rumours it'd been pillaged by the nets but chose not to heed them to my detriment. Devoid of any sign of life in I'd say ideal conds.

3rd and 4th sesh we returned to a likely looking mark we'd only tried in the depths of winter with modest results. Had fantastic flattie fishing here with steady streams of 30+cm dabs and flounder, fewer in number to 36cm. Some of them felt like small rays at times in the deep water. Also had a share of dogs but tolerable amongst the more desirable species.
During quiet spells we dropped in close on the LRF rods for ballan, corkwing, rock-cook, pollack, coalie, pout and poor cod. Sandeels and white-trout everywhere but again feathering produced no mack with just a lone-ranger taken off the bottom on bait.
A great 3 days all-in-all and looking forward to getting back.

Interspersed throughout the above have been a few mack bashes in the lough when a couple of hours can be stolen here and there.

Great picture, looks like the ocean and the sky are one. It's great when it's calm like that and you get a decent fish on :) well done.
