Report:

So I went to a new location for me to try for some bass or smoothies as I heard things were good - not one to under supply myself I spend a small mortgage on bait and head out to the rocks.

There is a few guys allready fishing, 2 guys on the back of the point, they are having great sport - 11 or 12 smoothies and a tope. The guy beside me is on 4 smoothies and I am all set to go.

I get nothing for the first few hrs, but neither does anyone else so im not too worried, My baits are big cocktails, something I have to get out of the habit of doing, at one point I stuffed a crab and a rag into a squid, mummified it and pierced it a few times, it got loads of interest, but no takes :(

After the guy near me starts pulling fish again, I watch his set-up - rag, actually half a rag on a 1/0 - And he is up to 7 smoothies now. I give myself a stern talking to and put on a 3HF size 2/0 and half rags, lob it out and wait. 30 seconds later the rod bends, my beer spills and im into my 1st smoothie :D

Lesson learned - size does'nt matter <_< >_>

Nice fish, although from reading posts here I was a little disappointed in the fight, I though it would be much better but I was very happy none the less. 2 more smoothhounds over the next hr, I'm getting good at this!

Anytime I even put mackeral on my hands and the smell transferred to my bait I was getting doggies - so that went back in the box for another day.

So as i'm fishing in semi weedy conditions and unfortunately losing a bit of gear, my flapper rig has my 2nd last lead and I decide to go big again with my remaining one so I can use up whatever bait I have left. I get a squid and stuff it as before - shove down a rag, block it with a crab, tie it up, pierce it good and fling it out.

After about 20 mins I'm looking at my rods and the squid rod screams, I have a moderate drag on, so much so, none of the smoothies really clicked much of the drag, but this roared line - It was one of those confusing moments when you wonder did you just hook a great white!! This cant be a smoothie - I have never caught a tope so not sure about the take, bass take and go, and this certainly took and went but with 50zs and good drag on I'm not sure - anyway, 3/4 of the way to shore after taking heavy bangs and big swings in depth and direction the rod bounces back to me. fuuuuuuuuu - gone. On inspection the pully rig snapped in the center. giving me back my snap swivel and pully swivel. I was not a happy chappy - didnt even get to see it.

Anyone any thoughts of what it could have been?

Another smoothie on the books finished me up taking my debut tally to 4 between 3 and 6lbs and I was delighted. But, the one that got away............

No i dont think it was either, what is a tope take like, or is there anything else it could have been other than a bass or tope at rosslare point?

Well done on the hounds. Some nice ones landed recently.

In relation to the big one that got away, there is a ferocious amount of heavy weed down in the burrow at the moment which gets washed out as the tide turns. I've often seen a decent fish take and the get swallowed up which exacerbates the fight. I drifted at about 4 knots the other day against the breeze so that will give you an indication of how a good fish and weed will move. Where you were fishing is also deceptively shallow which means the water will move quickly as it flows from the deeper channel behind you.

The odds are you hit a tidy tope, especially if you felt it fight back against the rod.
