Glenarm Breakwater 15/10/05

Results:5 Dogs and 1 BIG Rockling


Report:Not a bad night, would have caught more if I had been fishing harder but was taking it easy. Dogs plentiful ( as always ) seemed quite hard to hook though, had alot of them break out the lead but not get hooked :?

Set up Conger gear but this only yielded a Rockling about 1 1/4lbs - not bad on a 5/0 :shock:

Fished here earlier in the week during daylight but proved to be a bit of a disaster with only 2 small codling so will stick to the night sessions.

a mate fished it over the weekend and had a load of fish off it, said that everytime the bait hit the bottom when it came dark within a couple of minutes the fish were hangin on the hooks!load of dogs and a few other species i think.
i found the problem of hooking the dogs at this venue as you have, but only during daylight.i changed rigs onto foot long snoods with a size 2 grauvell sickle hook and was getting them two at a time, all hooked in the side of the mouth.they are a kind of semi circle hook.the theory i went on was that using a grip lead with the shorter snoods, when the fish lifted the bait with the smaller hook they werent as wary of taking it ,then when they moved off the resistance of the grip lead pulled against the hook and set it in the side of their mouth.
when fishingh here i tend to fish from the concrete platform, just as it runs onto the rocky breakwater and whack it as far as i can towards garron point.

That is where I was fishing from. Kept company by a very bashful RAT - no fear in it at all. Had to keep a close eye on the bait :lol:

Where do you get the hooks you were talking about? Are they similar to Varivas semi-circles?

i got them from viking tackle in bray.the varivas may do a similar job though havent seen them yet to test

me and mate fished here tonight for a few hours, there were 2 other guys down that visit the site. used rag and mackrel got a load of doggies and a nice pollock.

seemed to have no problem hooking the doggies fortunately/unfortunately lol

in the hours of dark hooking the dogs is not a problem here.during daylight you will always catch some too, but some days they are more wary than others, thats when you have to start tryin different things. any codling worth talking about appearing over there yet?

Certainly not either of the days that I was there, maybe next time :D

Might give it another go on Friday, will have to see what is happening with tides etc.

Alright guys,

me and the bro are planning to give Glenarm Breakwater a bash on Saturday. We plan to use rag/squid/mack on pulleys and scratching rigs but we have recently invested in some new spinning gear so we are going to give them a good bash.

We normally fish the beach but results have been poor....

just stay simple, try rag/mac or rag/squid or sandeel/mack cocktails , two hooks, size 1 or 2 and you should get a few , no real need for pulleys off the breakwater
