Me and dad have only ever sea fishin in Ireland around the north coast and for years he kept saying about how we should head south for a few days and get a line wet. being how its my dad and hes all talk and no organising i took it upon myself to sort it all out. so 6 months ago accomodation was booked at "The Peacock". got a cabin for about £80 each for the week which suited our small budget but down side was it was miles away from anywhere so it took ages getting about the pennisula, average speed down there is probably about 25mph due to the twisty, narrow roads. we managed to nearly fill the whole car, it amazing how much stuff you think you need

so landed down on sunday evening after a 6 hours drive got unpacked cabin was basic but it was all you needed and had electricity a fridge and cold running running water, immediately set off to Dursey Sound. was only 30 miles away but due to the roads took us over and hour to get there. got down and set up on the small pier fishing in the eddy out of the main run of water between the land and island. hads baits on the bottom, float and had feathers going for mackerel but after an hour no joy. no even a bite. we were looking at each other thinking is this what we drove this whole way for???? moved round to the right over the fence to fish in the main channel and it picked up immediately. 3rd cast with the feathers i got 3 pollock, and it stayed pretty productive for me at least, got about 8 or 9 pollock 1 coalie and and nice almost 3lb wrasse, dad only got one pollock. after an house dad had had enough as he was knackered from the driving so we went back to the cabin.

Monday morning was a late start due to the 9 hours plus driving the day before dad wanted an easy start which was fair enough. the day didnt start well as when i went to check on the rag in the fridge it had been set too low and the rag was frozen. wasnt impressed but we were having more delivered so was too angry. went to see Paul Harris at http://www.dromagowlanehouse.com/, since it was his website and reports that made me want to go there in the first place. Pauls the best, great source of information and you can tell by talking to him if there is any way he can help you he will. he gave us a map and brief guide of the marks he had scouted along with an entertaining story or 2, was a good chat and on his advice we went to DOD pier to fish for Ray and Huss as neither of us had caught one before. Got down and cast out, but wind was blowing the complete wrong direction, near right in your face, and was pretty difficult to fish, stuck it out for an hour and a half with 1 brown crab to show for it before moving on. did see 2 ship wrecks though, one on the way down and one out in the channel, not something i see that often so was interesting to see

Spirits starting to flag a bit after the blank we headed back to dursey sound as we knew there were fish there and i thought i would try to get objectives 1 and 2. got to the same spot as last time and the wind was being channeled through the mountains like a wind tunnel and it was raining sideways!!! fortuneately the spot we were at sheltered us from the worst of it but it was still hard going. saying that though i did get a new PB pollock and 3 3/4lb. not a monster but i was still well chuffed, also got it on a firetail so objectives 1 and 2 were sratched off. dad picked up a nice wee one on a shimmer eel and we also got a few wrasse on the frozen rag. in the end the weather was starting to eat through our clothes and were getting soaked so decied to call it a night before we got too drenched.

tuesday morning we were waiting for bait to be delivered, Paul Harris wouldnt order any in for us (which is prefectly understandable as in the past he had problems with people not showing up and him ending out of pocket) he did the next best thing and let us get it delivered to him instead so we wouldnt be waiting around a campsite. ordered it from nationwide baits, excellent service, will definitely use them again i thought after ordering. killed the morning in Kenmare, got the souveniers bought had lunch etc until paul rang us to tell us the bait was here, so off we went. when i opened the ragworm i actually said out loud "oh my god, Dad come and have a look at this", i havent seen ragworm of that quality in years, they looked like that were dug 5 minutes ago not spent 2 days in transport, now i will absolutely definitely be using them again. paul also hooked us up with some fresh and frozen mackerel he had just got in and pointed us in the direction of dunboy castle.

when we arrive and the mark, it look perfect, there was a deep water drop off up to 30ft deep for wrasse and pollock (and the best quality rag to fish for them with) sand at distance for ray and the occasional Huss and flats, and then just whatever else turned up. i arrived at the spot first, it was mostly sheltered from the wind, the sun was shining and it was flat calm, had a little flutter of excitement. turn around to see what was keeping dad and starting making my way down a very small slope, about 2 feet high, bent my left leg to lower my right foot onto the rocks, right foot slipped and the left leg buckled underneath me, full weight of me, rucksack, rods and bait, fell straight on to the left leg almost in a seating position, broke my fibula and ripped my ankle out of joint. my first thought was "ah **** now im not going to get to fish!!!" didnt actually care id broken my leg only cared i wouldnt get fishing, when dad finally turned up i wasnt in too much pain at this point but i knew it was broken as i could feel. i was sitting there calming smoking and he had a big excited grin on his face, i shouted over to him, "Dont get too excited ive fallen and broken my leg" he laughs and walks on, didnt take to long to convince him i was serious though. he went a bit nuts at this point, as we were 10 minutes walk from the car, he headedstraight into the bushes and started pulling out big branches for me to try and use as a crutch. this wasnt going to work so sent him to get help, luckily there was a guy and his daughters walking past and he and dad helped me back to the path and on the path there was a guy with a tractor who took me back to the car. headed to the nearest town to see the local GP who gave me some ineffectual pain killers and told us we had to drive nearly 2 hours to Cork university hospital. that we did and i was a loooooong painful drive ill tell you what. once there i was triaged and doped up so was pretty comfortable, was seen xrayed and bandaged up within the hour but they wanted an othropedic surgeon to look at me which meant waiting on a trolley in a corridor for nearly 4 hours. finally he showed and said i needed an op and they could do it the next day, but from post op recovery and follow up appointments i decided it would be best to have the op in belfast so it would all be done by the same people, drove the 2 hours back to the campsite, at lot more comfortable this time with a pillow to rest my leg on kindly donated by the nurse and gut full of pain killers. next day we got all packed up, although a bit more organised this time, dad had to play tetris to fit everything in the car so i could also sit in the back seat and rest my leg on the from seat. 7 hours later we arrived the the Mater Hospital, they said they dont deal with orthopedic injurys but would take a look anyway, i rolled my eyes but was in too much pain to argue so went with it, they me me in xrayed and referred straight to the fracture clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital within the hour, worked out for the best as if we went to the A&E at the royal we would have been there all day. once at the royal i was examined admitted and in bed on a ward by 9. big downside now was due to the non serious nature of my injury it was easy to get bumped of the surgery list for more serious injuries. was admitted on wednesday but didnt actually get my op until the following tuesday. had a plate and pins on my fibula and a big pin just above my ankle connect my fibula and tibula which im told is holding my ankle joint together, i also have to go back in 3 months and have another op to get this big pin removed. finally escaped from hospital on thursday.

holiday was ruined but i still got a new PB pollock and lure caught pollock so it was all bad, though it was a long way for my dad to drive to only catch 2 pollock.

i think my fishing may be cancelled for the rest of the year, but hey, theres always next year, and i wont let it put me off rock marks,

Damn man, that's some terrible bad luck you had there, sorry to hear it especially as that was a trip you'd waited a lifetime for. I know what you mean by being more gutted about the fishing than your leg and I bet you manage to convince your da to push you down a harbour at some point this year for 'The Wheelchair Chronicles.' I was off my feet after an op last year for 7 months, not through an accident, but I found reading everyone's reports on here to be almost as fulfilling as getting out myself. I was going to suggest meeting up soon too at one of the rough ground marks you'd tried already, as the time's almost right, but no way you'll be going anywhere like that for a long time. Btw, obviously not for a good while, but if you do get out say in a few months while you are recovering a mark I would recommend would be Carnlough beach. You can park the car beside the ramp and fish the corner beside the ramp where you can sit on the ledge plus there is flat sand and it is well lit. I managed a few sessions there last year when I wasn't physically able to go anywhere else plus fishing is pretty good late Summer through Autumn. Just thought i'd suggest it to perhaps give you something to look forward to, all the best and get well soon.

Hi Yngkmd, having just booked a few days on the Beara I was really looking forward to reading your report - monster pollock, specimen wrasse, several species of ray and a few large conger eels. However, I was totally gobsmacked :? by the time I had finished reading it - and despite all that happened to you to read that you were still focused on the fishing - amazing  !!!

Get well soon.

You'll appreciate my fear of rock marks a little more now, although you didn't tell me the full extent. You're forgiven though because you were smacked off your tits on cocodamol and smarties, your texting ability was compromised

Lovely PB's though, grab yourself a wee cowbell to summon your maid.

Just finished reading this,,,  ,,,,,and I have to say I have nothing but admiration for yourself and your Dad,,,,,,,,,who must be up there with Al (from Al and Jordan) as regards going above and beyond beyond the call of duty in bringing his son fishing. At the start we have no idea of the mishaps that are about to befall you :? ,,,,and by the end I was in shock   . The way you end on a positive note is uplifting,,,,,,,,you got washed out of it, your bait froze, you broke your ankle and your fishing will be cancelled for the rest of the year, but on a positive note,"Theres always next year  ". Great attitude,,,,I wish you all the best for your recovery and look forward to your next report

it was a good trip but very short, a long way to go for 6 hours fishing....scenery was amazing as well. will definitely be back

if you seen the spot and just how very very very fishy it looked you'd have been annoyed too to have to leave without getting a line wet. my priorities did change slighty on the long painfull drive to the hospital though. was still gutted at having to cut the holiday short

fishy1987 wrote:fished dunboy once and the rocks are hard moving around allright

most frustating thing is it wasnt even hard going, it was a near flat rock on a slope about about a 30 degree angle, it was more an unlucky landing that anything else. probably would have done less damage if id fallen off a cliff :)

a few nice fish indeed just gutted we didnt get to stay longer, i bought a scratch card in the hospital shop and won £30 the day after i was admitted, hopefully i havent used up too much of the good luck thats coming to me.

oh yeah as soon as the cast comes off and i can hobble ill be draggin me da out somewhere flat and easy to walk on, thinking maybe waterfoot pier as i can sit on the guard rail, will be frustrating to know im missing the main wrasse and conger seasons, will probably miss the autumn pollock and all, though i should be good to go just in time for winter pike.

i dont know chris, as you already know i have 2 plates and 17 pins in my arm from a motorbike accident and i went straight out and bought a bigger, more powerful and more importantly faster bike. i dont think a plate or a couple of pins in my leg will put me off rock marks. i think it boils down to how you look at it. lets face it if i stopped doing something everytime i hurt myself while doing it i had nothing to do :) :) i think if anything this is just making me want to tackle torr head next summer

if im honest, its actually me who drags me dad out sea fishing all the time, if it wasnt for me he wouldnt do much more than his twice monthly jaunt to the trout lake near his house.

but as for the positive note, well i have a vast experience of sitting around feeling sorry for myself and eventually learned theres no point plus looking forward to and planning my next fishing trip helps as a distraction from my present situation. but anyways thats how fishing goes isnt it, theres always next time, next cast, next session, next trip or in my case most likely next year.

thats for the replies and condolences everyone.........i hope you can all put up some good reports over the coming months to remind me what im missing

In fairness I actually went fishing with my foot still in the healing process (before the consultant gave the all clear :P) Didn't stop me at all but does make me think about exactly where my feet are. Same with bikes too, fell off plenty of times but still got back on :P

I even joined a club
