hi T.J.
trade secrets
if u want to catch bass use flying Cs better than any other lure inc.plugs
copper/dark red day when sunny clam No 3
silver black evening/low light
other colours work sometimes
out fishes the likes of G. sprats/kilty Ks./redgills/ect.
they are also fairly cheap u can get 10 for about 20 euro they last for ages they make most other lures seem useless and very exp.
they have got what it takes to get the bass going flash/wiggle and vibration they can be worked fast or slow deep or shallow
ask any salmon fisher how good they are.

cannot tell about the home made ones. only to say they are better......

First Bass !

After all these reports I just had to check out Cunnigar Beach !
Got up early last Weds 17th and headed off. Arrived at 10 am - tide fully out.
Nice day for fishing though, overcast, warm and an offshore breeze.
Parked in the car park, planned on a walkabout to get my bearings, just took a spinning rod and a few lures and walked to the very end of the spit (about 25 minutes). Turned right at the end of the spit and walked along the shore - casting as I went. Lots of little mullet chasing sprats - a little further along I could see nice sized silvery things in the water - hhmmm - bass !
Put on my super duper bass bullet - looks great, casts better, caught nothing .
Changed to an old Abu Koster 40g (silver spoon type lure) and BANG - straight away I caught a 2 pounder at about 60 yds out. Caught 3 more around 2 pound each over the next hour - all 50 to 70 yds from the shore. They give a great fight on light tackle - I was using a Daiwa 11' spinning rod, a Penn Prion 7400 spinning reel and 12 lb line - great sport. They really hit the spinner hard - all four of them had all 3 hooks in their mouth - luckily the hook was easy enough to remove with doing any obvious damage - all fish returned safely.
Back to the car at 1 pm for a sambo and cup of tea.
Went ground fishing with rag for the afternoon - just by the wooden stakes back along the beach - blanked, nothing for the rest of the day.
Now I know these were just schooling bass and 2 pounds is quite small but they were my first bass, well pleased I was !

Best Regards

Aidan

Thanks for that Art - you can't beat local knowledge.
It's a bit of a donkey trot for me to get there - 3.5 hours there and 3.5 hours home again, but I plan to get a day in September there.
I'll definitely get some flying C's - tell me, do you dig the lug right there on the beach ?
I spotted that rocky/weedy area when the tide was out - will setup there next time.

A 12 pounder would make my year, but still, I'm just as happy once I'm out and about with a rod in my hand !

Off up the east coast this Saturday for a recce - Co Meath and Louth.

Kind regards

Aidan
