Greystones south 11-12-10

Sun Dec 12, 2010 1:37 pm

People:Myself and Denis

Duration:18.15-22.00

Tide:LW at 21.00

Weather:Clear and calm. Light North westerlies.

Bait:Frozen rag, mackeral, squid, sandeel.

Rigs:3-hook flappers, pulleys and clip-downs.

Results: 2 Flounder and one 3-beard rockling.

Report: Was itching to get out after the last few weeks when I opted for the fireplace rather than the shoreline, so decided to head to Greystones for a 'whatever's in the freezer' session.
Arrived at the beach about 18.00 and was up and fishing by 18.15. A lovely clear evening to be out, not much surf running but was hoping to scratch out a few fish anyway. Had a flounder of about 20 cm after and hour on the frozen rag, which had previously outfished fresh worm on this mark , and then another one to about 15 cm about half an hour later. All the while the distance rod had remained untouched. Things went totally quiet then until about 9.30 when I noticed the tip nodding a bit on the distance rod. Was pleasantly surprised to land a nice 3-b rockling of roughly 30 cm, a new species for me and I think a decent size for this species?? No photo unfortunately as I forgot my phone  Was hoping for a doggie or two but they never showed up, or else I just can't cast far enough!! Packed up about 22.00 as the Chinese takeaway was calling. All-in-all a pleasant evening even if the fishing wasn't great.

30cm is about average or slightly above it.

i got a good rockling of about 40cm during the summer past. they are a great fish to eat! (if they are big enough..)

i was fishin myself last night up here in the north coast. same story, the fish werent playing ball as much as hoped, but it was still very pleasant - it was quite mild and a nice clear night on the beach - for december!

fair play on getting out - are you sure it was a three beard rockling - oh no here we go again!

it could have been a large shore rockling or it was indeed a three beard

did it look like this fella
