People: Me and my Da
Duration: 3 hours
Tide: Rising
Weather: Awful
Bait: Crab, lug, mussel, squid, lobworm (thats right lobworm!!)
Rigs: Floats with stingers, lures
Results: Pollock, wrasse macks
Report:
We towed our boat down to Dingle but with the wather being so rubbish we only managed to get out for about 3 hours, just long enough to get into tralee bay and pick up lots of macks for food and bait. They were very plentiful.
As they weather was so bad we fell back on shore fishing for one of the days. We tried out a new mark near dingle and did pretty well with some pollcok to about 3lbs and good numbers of wrasse.
Was actually surprised how well the wrasse fishing went as i was unsure how the are would fish. We fished an area near dingle where the tide floods into a rocky gulley , there was about 20 feet depth at high water. The most successful bait turned out to be smaller crabs tipped with large lobworms, which seemed to be getting better results than the lug or crab on its own, the lobs were very mobile on the hooks which probably helped.
Best fish was about 4.5lbs or so and i think we had about 15-20 each.
after about 3 hours the weather got pretty rubbish so we called it

Some cracking Wrasse fishing there Adam, well done. I must admit that I wouldnt have thought of using lobworms for Wrasse but I suppose the added movment of them make the bait that bit more enticing, I must give it a go next time. I know what you mean about the weather, I was down that direction about the same time as yourself and it really turned pretty nasty alright for a while.

cheers all
Yeah they scrapped pretty well, short and sharp really. I usually think that if you havent landed a wrasse after 30 seconds of a fight then its in the rocks and you never will
Yes they were a few fat ones Art, not sure when they spawn actually could have been spawn bound but i have had fat ones like that in every month from may to october.
They were certainly full of small mussels, thats one thing i look for at a wrasse mark, if there are lots of tiny mussels on the rocks at low water then theres usually good wrasse around, actually west coast, rocks, clear water, mussels, depth 20 feet or more around and usually the wrasse fishing is pretty easy.
Should say that of the 35-40 fish we had 50-55% were on the stinger only, 20% were hooked on the stinger and main hook, and only 25% on the main hook only.
saw your report dave, may have seen you out at the harbour mouth one of the days, was considering a bit of ray fishing but say a couple of people out there so didnt bother in the end.

Excellent fishing Adam. At least you toughed it out in some pretty sh!te weather. If we get any half decent weather between now and October I might consider a tow down. I'll give you a shout if it happening.
Chat later,
Kev

I use earthworms in strangford lough, work classically, had pollack, cod, wrasse, macks, scad, sandsmelt, flats, blennies, shannies, sea scorpians, sandgobies, etc, etc, etc, etc on them.

Terrific wrasse guys, well done!
Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "lobworm"
Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:41 pm
a form of earthworm, work just as well as ordinary earthworms. if you ever see on of the bigger worms you find in a garden, field, etc it is most likely a lobworm.
