Port na Blagh Pier, Donegal

Mon Jul 20, 2009 5:05 pm

People: Myself

Duration: 1am-3am

Tide: Falling

Weather: Clear calm night

Bait: Mackerel strip

Rigs: 2 Hook Flattie

Results: 1 eel, 1 3 bearded rockling

Report:

Decided on an impromptu couple of hours at the pier before bed with a beer. Set up two rods and had a fair few knocks over the couple of hours but missed most of them. Managed a decent common eel of around 2ft long and a nice 3 bearded rockling, both caught inside the "new" pier on mid to low tide. Once the tide was completely out the bites stopped and I went home.

First time ever fishing in the dark and really enjoyed it! I think a congor mission will have to follow soon 8)

Would only consider that as a mullet mark, myself. Well done on getting other species out of it.

You weren't actually fishing Portnablagh pier instead, by any chance? :D

I haven't actually seen anyone fish the main pier in Dunfanaghy village but I would have thought the tide should bring in flatfish and maybe the odd rogue sea trout. Never seen mullet but then again I haven't really been looking either, must go down some day at high tide for a nosey!

There's mullet there alright. Also, have a nosey at the bridge to Horn Head an hour to an hour and a half before high water/and hour after high water. You'll find them there too.

There was a strap conger resident in the pier in Dunfanaghy last year, only about 16 inches long. Wonder if he's still about?

I assume you're from the area then (or like me, a weekend blow-in..)

I have been going down for years but only recently discovered how good the fishing can be, really enjoying it. Even tried the lakes an odd time for trout (though without success as yet)

I'm local.

The Rainbow Trout Fishery in Creeslough is the place to go to if you want a trout, though it is permit only & fly only. €20/1 fish visitor ticket session.

Note: Not an unbiased opinion

Yeah been meaning to get down to lough na tooey, must give it a go this year, looks good craic.

Fished the New Lake and Glen Lough last year on the fly, completely fruitless, very little even showing.

Get in touch with me before you go, I'll point out where the trout are hiding. You'd be surprised.
