Fished Killoughter, Co. Wicklow today from 1030 - 1500hrs over an incoming tide. Weather and sea were beautiful after the mist had gone but the fishing was'nt great. Had ragworm, peeler crab, frozen mackeral and sandeel and between 3 of us only manager a few small Whiting and Dab's. Fishing was made very difficult by the vast amount of floating seaweed and a strong southerly run. The access road was in quite a state also with more water than dry surface, only attempt this dirt track with either a 4X4 or a small boat. All the same it got me out of the house for a few hours and I was able to use up the last of the ragworm before the winter ban comes in tomorrow.

Ragworm spawn during the winter, so some people observer a self -imposed ban.

Clubs that are part of the IFSA adhere to a winter ban on ragworm in any of their competitions from the 1st of November every year. While it does not affect personal fishing most of us will observe the rule and not use any ragworm for that part of the year ( it gives the rag time to multiply and hopefully will keep a supply there for future generations).
