Went down to Coal yard/quay, just up from Lacken on Saturday...nice day to be out fishing that's for sure...first couple of casts we got some decent flounder about 2-3 lb's then it tailed off pretty bad and only got the odd one throughout the day....run was very strong, that'll teach me to look at the tides closer won't it...Only way we could get any fish was using floating beads as the crabs were there in there millions..Nice day for fishing though..Will head back down late November for another try this time I'll get the height of the tide.

Lads just a word to all the Dublin anglers who *fish* Laken every year without fail. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE return the flounder alive. I have lost count of the number of times I have gone down there to see people (it has to be said mostly Dubs!) who have black bin bags full of quality flounder. Lads it aint goin to last forever if the fish are taken out of it.

Well don't know who they would be cause we only keep maybe one or 2 fish if they are decent for the table.....I've been fishing for over 25 years and have always ran a system of only taking a fish or 2 for the table home with me.....Most of the Dub lads that I know that fish either take nothing home or maybe one fish....the people that take bin bags full home would get an ear full from me if I saw them.....We only took one fish on my last trip there(between 2 of us) and that was because the bugger got both hooks down so fast he was screwed anyway......
John lumping all Dub anglers who fish Lacken like that I find is a bit unfair but I will admit that there is alot of anglers from everywhere that need to be made aware of the fact that taking that much fish out of any spot is not good. If anyone sees an angler taking allot of fish out of a place they should have a nice little polite chat with them just to make them aware of falling fish stocks.

this is sound advice. use aberdeen hooks as they are fine wire and if a fish is deep hooked the line can be cut and at least the fish has a chance to live. dont just kill flounder for the sake of it. maybe some people like flounder as a food fish. fair enough, take a couple but not all. ive seen people get a severe dose of 'mackeralfeatherbasheingitis' with regard to the flounder in these parts. i take a camera everywhere with me so i can take a picture of a decent fish and see it swim away again. like john says if they are all taken there will be nothing left.

I don't know what reserach exists about flounder migration and if they come back to the same estuary, but I presume they do. I know of an angler who fished a well known spot in Youghal and out of interest clipped a v shape into the tail of all the flounder he caught one session and came back a month later and guess what he caught 3 flounder with the V cut in their tails. It therefore looks like that they may be very localised, so be careful about keeping fish. Whats there today may not be there tomorrow.

I fish the Galway Limerick and Clare side a lot and the same things happens and you guessed it so called grown men from a certain Co cutting the wings off lovely ray alive and throwing the rest back.
And some of these guys are people who think they are anglers and you know who you are they arrive in on the beach rocks or pier let every one know where they are from and take over the place with all their fancy cars and rods.
Some of them even have the cheek to be-little you to your face come on lads your not very popular wherever you go.
And when you fish the east coast beaches they intimidate you if you are there before them.
By the way I know a few anglers from that Co and they are sound great lads and a good laugh there are a few then and they practically tell you to your face they are superstars in the sea angling fraternty ha ha if only they knew what people taught of them.
Not Much !

there is nothing wrong with taking a fish for the pot...but i do agree not more than is needed. and if you want to take the wings off a ray, generally they have to be cut off..dont you think that makes sense?
just because someone uses a rod that they have bought and not handed down to them from generations doesnt mean they are superstars! maybe they like to enjoy their fishing with tackle that is pleasant to use.
and as for anglers from this 'certain' county, here we go again.. these country boyos cant stand to see other people enjoy fishing in this beautiful country.. they want to keep these spots for themselves, after all their fathers handed them down this land that they fought for in the Battle of Ballygobackwards. get a grip lads, get on your tractors and explore the rest of the country!

Ahhhh....... and all the posts are from guests. :? Lads if ye have a gripe, put your name to your post give a little backround for your gripe, otherwise it does look childish.
One thing though. I sometime take a fish for the pot. If I am cleaning the fish on the pier/rock/shore I always throw the remnants back. I was always of the opinion that it would be recycled in the ocean by the crabs / small fish thus helping a bit. Surely better that letting a carcass rot on the shore :?: Just my thoughts.

Getting back to the original topic kind of...... the Wexford clubs successfully run a closed season for Lacken / Coal Yard where no angling is allowed. This to stop people catching the very large specimen flounder which are nearly always female and full of eggs. The ban is observed by the local anglers from Wexford and Waterford, but, and I hate to say it..... the Dublin anglers year after year break the ban, catch the female flounder and bring them home. Can anybody see any sense in this??
For the posters above let me set a few things straight. This is not an attack on Dublin anglers, it just happens to be that the vast majority of these people who come down to Lacken each year are from Dublin. That is fact and no amount of childish 'cluchie bashing' can change this.
I have no problem with anglers from Dublin fishing in Lacken or indeed anybody taking a fish for the pot. What I do disagree with however is so called anglers breaking a ban which has been put in place for very good reasons and again so called anglers taking upwards of a dozen fish 'for the pot'.
Finally maybe the all these guest posters are actually from Dublin but are too ashamed to admit it because of the bad name they have all around this country.

Mac what a pearl of wisdom, how long did it take you to come up with that little gem?? I really dont think your argument of throwing the fish carcass back after they have been gutted really contributes to the discussion. I think the point that the poster is trying to make is that these anglers cut the wings off ray when they are still alive. Read the post before you try and make clever comments.

**** me what one post on a little trip can start....What is the date of the closed season as there was a bunch of local anglers fishing there when we where there...
As for this Dublin thing, well I think I won't be posting much here anymore about fishing in lacken or anywhere near it, seems to cause to much s***. Probably should not bother fishing it...
