Katts Strand, Wexford Harbour.

We held our annnual Open Shore match here on Sunday 19th September. Once again the venue lived up to its reputation as one of the countries best flounder venues. A total of 352 fish were taken by 40 anglers. The winner had 15 fish, while the best junior had 14. As the match was fished on a catch & return basis most of the fish were returned alive. The quality of flounder was a bit surprising as there were several fish over 38cms. The best bait was fresh peeler crab.

We have details of what rigs produce most fish on many of the Wexford venues on our web-site (venue page)http://homepage.eircom.net/~beach/kilmore/kilmore.htm

The information is just a general guideline, however many of the rigs are tried and trusted at this stage.

Sorry George, Just checked our website and the snood strenght is not included. Normally most match anglers will use anything from 12 to a very max of 25 lb snood line. Some days the lighter snoods will tangle more than the heavier ones. Try the lighter 15lb to start and if you get tangles move up to a heavier line. Also many anglers have moved on to the realy light rods such as the specialist flattie rods & light line (10 to 12lb) on small spinning reels. These appear to have made a huge difference in the catches.

:whats the best rig to use while fishing katts strand and what bait is best

Without doubt the best bait is peeler crab, which will pick up flounder, eels and possibly the odd Bass. You really are wasting your time fishing with anything else here.

As regards rigs a simple three hook flowing trace is best. Lenghts of about 5ft, with snood breaking strain of 10 - 12lbs (vary according to weather conditions). Size 2 hooks.

Thinking about fishing Katts strand this weekend, what's the best tides to fish it. Also spots etc...Have been there years ago and really can't remember the spots..Mind you I'll probably remember when I get there but better off safe than sorry..

Thanks

As you walk/drive up the Katts there is a wreck of a boat about fifty yards up the strand. This is a good enough spot and in many smaller matches this area is not pegged for that reason. The best time to fish is on a falling tide and over low water if at all possible. Low water next Sunday is app 4.30pm.
The Leinster junior & under 21 league is being held in the Katts this coming Sunday afternoon, if your around it would be worth look to see some of the provinces top young anglers in action.

Fished the Katts Strand yesterday evening and had the best fishing in ages. In the 3 hour session I had a total of 14 flounder (all were returned to fight another day) some of which were well over 1Kg in weight (fishing just beyond the wreck). I found the advise given on the forum to be very useful, I have always struggled to catch flounder in Wexford harbour up to now that is.
