Pookie - I suggest that you take a look at the thread titled 'shads' in this section of the forum. I think in April last year.
It is my experience that casting shads cast further than plugs, catch fish and have a low loss rate. They are cheap too. :)
It would seem that the 25 g. size would be right for your rod.

Take a look on E Bay for weighted Shads / Lures the selection is unbelievable. Try the "Sea Fishing" section as well as "Coarse".

ye of little faith in the simple lures and who are dazzled by modern flashers should take heed-"the best bass bait pound for pound is the EDDY STONE EEL" in various colours and sizes,. fished with or without the clear bubble depending on circumstance. believe it if u like- but i have educated many Thomases. it's open to ur debate

Pookie,
There is a huge range of lures available for a range of different fishing styles. I like to fish floating poppers over weedy/ snaggy marks and jointed lures seem to work well too. Some people swear by certain colours or styles but its nice to have a range and find what works best in the area’s you fish, time of day, year, tide, light levels, water colour can all effect the attractiveness of your lure.. sometimes the simpler methods like the eddy’s will work best and other times jointed lures with rattles or poppers are better. If you are after a longer cast heavier lure and shads can be used. E-bay is a good source of lures but its worth shopping around as prices can vary a lot from dealer to dealer. I Myself have a full range of cheaper non-branded bass lures available at the moment (Ron Thompson and Rapala and ABU Clones). I normally sell into UK via E-bay but offer Euro discounts and free postage to Ireland.
PM me if you are intrested or i can offer anymore help

Surface Poppers are deadly for bass.
I have had some success with the following:
Storm chug bugs; Maria Chico boca; Yozuri Mag (midnight and blue/silver); Dexter SP.
The above are a bit expensive and are aimed at tackle tarts like myself. Some of them having sliding magnets and rattles etc. and since they tend to be used for working around rocks you can shed a few tears on a bad night. I sometimes feel as if they are designed to lure the angler rather than the prey. However, they do work
There are cheaper poppers available from Ron Thompson and other manufacturers. There is a huge ugly and cheap popper called a bass buster, which has actually caught me a few bass.
I also use surface or shallow diving lures designed for pike fishing, jointed and unjointed. they work and don't cost a packet.
Shop around and listen to what other anglers have used to catch bass.

one summer dawn while fishing a well known bass spot amid a dozen other anglers(and no one catching) I plucked up the courage to try a bass buster. The guy next to me laughed when he saw it as everybody at this mark always fishes the bottom. on my first cast I got a 2.5 lb bass and about 10 Min's later landed an 8 lb bass (pic in my album). The local tackle shop sold out of them that day :D
