Hi All New to the Site and Need Help with a Tope Rod

i'm new to this site so would just like to say hi to every one first
could you recommend a good rod for tope in the summer something longish as i like to free-line baits back 50/60 yards or so and a good reel to do with it WILL SPEND £500

Seriously, no need to spend anywhere near that kind of dough. I used a TDXU in the summer to good effect for 30lb+ fish teamed with an Abu BG7000. Total cost about 350 euro. Any decent 12/20 class rod will handle tope fishing when teamed with a reasonable reel.

i like to use a shimano TLD15 or a daiwa sl30sh. for a rod i usually use my trusty ugli stick 30lb class which i won on a sea angler magazine comp. you should have plenty of change left, feel free to pay us for our advice :lol:

Get on ebay and keep an eye out for an ABU Morrum 7700CL. (The one with a levelwind). It may take a while for one to appear, but you've got till next tope season. It's a fantastic reel, ideal for tope and will also cover 95% of your angling needs in Ireland. Look to pay €180-€200 for a perfect example. Load it with 20lb Berkley Fireline for general all-round angling.

As for rods, some like an uptider as a tope rod. Go for one rated 2-8oz. Otherwise as petekd says, go for a 12-20 class downtider. If it was me, I'd be taking a very long hard look at the ABU Suveran.


All the above assumes you're thinking about tope angling from a boat. Shore tope angling is another game entirely!

if you want to get a boat reel and shore reel in one use the slosh, i too like the suveran tanglerat, very nice rod. ive heard fladen do a nice rod too.

for tope the rod you need is a wisker mesh from daiwa 12 to 30 with a slosh 30 loaded with 30lb power pro :)
you definitely dont need to spend that much.

Hi all thanks iv got a good 12/20 its only 7'4'' when free-lining baits back its just a bit on the short side for my liking
iv been considering a conoflrx vampire 11 uptider that has a twist lock but too i noticed someone on another forum looking for something si miler too but what i'm now thinking is if you have a 2/8oz uptider and a 12/20 will i find my self not using the one of them at all as i don't like up tiding

a tdxu 2-8, stands at 9ft 6, is a highly versitile rod, it is eaually at home uptiding as down tiding, i have had some good fun with mine as you can feel everything on it, from a tiny dab bite in 100ft of water to having the power to bring in double shots of ray and huss in a 6 knot tide.

i have also used it to good effect off the shore for pulling specimen ballans out of the rocks and congers off piers.

i also know of lads that use them with no hesitation for 40lb+ tope on the boat.

for only €185 it really is fantastic value for money, infact if i had to buy 2 rods for all my boat fishing it would probably be 2 tdxu's

Have a look at the Abu Suveran uptiders, I have the lighter one and used it to catch Tope to 39lb which it handled with ease.

ya the tdxu is a fairly sevsitive rod, according to the writing on the side of the rod it has a "sensitive tip and powerhouse butt"

lovely feel and even used it off loop head during the summer in 300 foot of water, where it handled 3 pollock at a time each in the 7lb region, no problem to it.

iv never had a tope on one but i know several that have. brilliant rod

If you're looking for a small lever drag reel try the Avets, I've got an SX and it a brilliant wee reel.
