Braid Line

Thu Nov 01, 2007 12:22 pm

A couple of questions on braid, if anyone can assist? My braid line has discoloured/bleached/gone white. Is this normal? With old style braid for flyfishing (many years ago) the line needed for be 'dried' after use - wound onto a drying spool and left in the air. I've not seen this mentioned against braid - should it be dried? When I dropped the line into 230-300 feet off Brandon 2 weeks back the line which had not seen light of day since being loaded look compressed and did not come off the reel in a flowing manner - tended to birdnest a bit. Any and all comments greatly accepted.

Hi Slowarm,

it's normal for braid to discolour after a bit of use, it's very slippy stuff and I don't think that the dyes even bite correctly on it.
With regard to the other problem I'd say make sure you wet the spool before you use it, douse it in fresh water and only start to use it when wet, never dry or it starts to birdy and is a lot less manageable.

Eoin.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about the colour, happens with all braids after a while. You can always switch it around and use the other end, effectively doubling the life of the braid.

I think you might find that the impacted line is on a part of the spool that isnt used too often,ie maybe you were fishing in deeper water the last time,if you free it gradually from the spool it shouldnt be a problem.

Just a few stuff bout braid...

-They do got seasoned and in some brand colored braid do bleed even when new.....
-Always put a few layer of mono line before spooling braid....spool them tight....
-The new braid on the spool do get nasty....give them time for them to 'give'...after sometimes they get friendlier.
-If using fix spool reel....always manually turn the bail arm before start reeling in.
-Other than braid itself...rod guides do have a few effect weather u will get more knots around the guide and wind knot or not.

How the line can wind on to the guide.
