I had the problem of wanting to bring my rods to cork, but the only way was on a bus
and as much as i hate buses i hate having to transport rods on buses, especially when one of them has a 7foot section and has no chance of being brought on board the bus.. and there is no way i'm sticking a zippy in the luggage compartment without some protection, so off to the local hardware store i went...
this is the result...
a cheap but extremly waterproof and rigid travel case
soft case

a bit of tubing

soft case now hard case
(you may want to turn your monitor on its side to see this)

the removable top..
also because i bought an end piece it was a few inches short.. but it saved me buying a full length.. just used a cover from a spindle of 100 cd's.. did the trick.. comes off with a little force so it wont fall off easily and adds those extra few inches.. all in all for the total of E20

anything gets thrown on that will end up worse off while my rods will be safer and i'm happier in the knowledge my rods (Zziplex) is safe in the luggage hold..
it is a little heavier to carry though, but its worth it in the end
:D

Steve,
I ship my rods to the States like that all the time in a tube made from a soil pipe with end caps, I added webbing handles to make it easier to carry....warning though.....you need to pack the rods with something, as rod sections damage each other if dropped or jerked.....all you need do is take some crinkled up newspaper and put it around the guides to make sure there is no room for the rods to move.
BTW....Black pipe looks a lot better....a Zziplex in a brown tube..tut..tut..tut...what next

Both end better be padded with some thing soft ie rag.old t-shirt to cover the end especially the tip end.

each rod is in its own rod sleeve so there shouldnt be any damage from rods bouncing off each other.. not only that they fit in in such a way that its as tight as a... well you get the idea... forgot to mention i have the bottom foamed up..
Tom: as for the colour .. believe me.. after the weekend.. that will change very quickly.. going to be pure black with reflective tape near both ends..
and will use the handles off the soft case to carry it ..
(why else do you think i'm concealing it in my soft case at the moment)

I think you should consult with kstaff before doing anything rash. He'll advise on best colour. Pick something that complements your floatie.

strangley enough.. i was looking at a nice Blue water pipe.. but the price of EU45 for a couple of meter put me off the idea.. apparently brown is still a cheap colour(bit like my school uniform...terrible colour  )

I use 2 tubes like that for transporting my rods any distance. I glued and siliconed a blanker onto the end as to keep them dry in transit. I also use a soft old t-shirt wrapped in bubble wrap pushed into the front end to protect the rod tips etc. You can also get bung ends that just push into the tube, these have a rubber end on them to stop water getting in, I use these at the end you put the rods in. These tubes can also be duck taped under the roof bars allowing a roof box to be used if you are going on holidays etc.
I put them onto roof bars on the car with ladder clips, the ones that have a hook on the end and look like they have been made out of screw bar that slide under the bars and you just spin the keeper up. Using these allows me to put the tubes onto the car and also remove them very fast. I find it makes for a more comfortable journey to the coast without the rod tips poking you in the ear or if you need to brake sharply them sliding through the middle of the car towards the windscreen etc.
The only thing you have to be aware of is, if you are taking a shorter rod you will need to strap it to a long one to allow you to slide it out with ease otherwise you might need to take off the tubes to allow you to retrieve the rod from the far end of the tube.
