Hi Pookie,

I always make a point of rinsing my reels after every trip. I'll then set them on some kithen roll to dry out. I service each reel after every 4 - 5 sessions. This method has served me well over the last couple of years that I've had decent kit.

I'll rinse my rods in clean water after each 4-5 sessions too.

I believe that if you can do this, it will help to reduce rust and corrison appearing later.

Hope this helps.

after long sessions, where u end up usin a few rods and a few reels, when u get hom ethe last thing on my mind is cleaning the gear..but it has to be done...no point paying good money for good gear and dont look after it...so i do as GG was talking about..cleaning reels after every use and rods every once and a while...

Only use fixed spool reels so not much looking after, but after every half dozen trips i just spray rods and reels down with wd40 then wipe with an old cloth and have no problems with rust. But use proper wd40 and not the cheap stuff as some of it stinks for ages.

always rinse the gear in freshwater after use. then spray the reel with WD-40 to knock out any extra moisture after drying. works well for me. been using the same ABU Amb 7000 since 1977 with no a bit of technical bother, rust, corrosion, etc.

How to get rid of existing rust? Sometimes you can work it off with oil, but i've never heard of x-salt. the problem with corrosion and rust once it sets in is that if it's heavy, then the equipment is weakened even if you get it off.

jeez, don't ever let it get that far! The thought of rust appearing on my reels is enough to give me the heebie-jeebies!

It does sometimes take a bit of mental effort after a long hard day out to rinse off your fishing gear, and give it a quick squirt of WD40 every now and then, but it only takes a couple of minutes and the effort is repaid over the long term.
