A good idea Rough ground weights

Sat Mar 31, 2007 12:20 am

Just wondering if anyone had used an idea that I saw recently for rough ground weights.

The fellow had taken old egg cartons and filled each segment with fast drying cement with a metal loop attached to each weight in the middle! Each egg segment weighed approx 3-4 ozs when filled. OK you cant blast them but for lobbing into the rough I thought it was a really good idea. If you loose them it wasn't a big deal. If you needed more weight you just added a couple to your end tackle. You dont even need to worry about getting them out of the mould, just take an old knife or a pair of scissors and cut down through the segments. The moulds are free also and you always can get you hands on plenty.

I thought it was a cracking idea and would save a great deal of lead.

What do you think?

I've been using them for years while wrasse fishing where casting distance is not required. A small bag of quick drying cement will create hundreds of weights. I use old hooks for the eyes to attatch the line to.

and as mentioned already - its saving on lead - not the best stuff to be leaving scattered around rocks 8)

You may start gathering up the egg cartons then Mac, 5kgs of cement! Just think of the amount of weights you could make with that amount.

The cement idea for weights are endless, the thin cartons that a box of apples use to keep them apart could be used. Okay they are not going to be too heavy but the shape that they make might be used to get the weight to the surface quickly.

Does indeed sound like a good idea. Just remember that these weights will not be reliable for blasting to the horizon - could end up being a disaster. And to those who belive that fishing leads in the ocean can damage the environment: lead is a naturally occuring substance. The amount used by anglers will not have any negative impact on the marine environment
