mullet fishing

Tramore bay was alive with them on Wednesday. Very spooky though. Every time we started the boat, Fish within 200 yards would run for cover.

You can get mullet the size of your arm at the Ballycarry bridge just going into Islandmagee. I have seen them loads of times whilst fishing for flounders there. Mostly in the summer it seems. I have not fished there for a good few years but I am pretty sure they will still show there.

Dunmore. Took a lot of prebaiting.

I have not seen any mullet in the Dodder / Liffey or the harbours as yet. I have been keeping an eye out for the last week.

Saw first mullet in the swords/broadmeadow estuary yesterday. Only 3 about a kilo each, so I would say they are arriving and any day soon now. Will have a shot at them next week over lunch. Office is right beside the estuary :lol: .
As for the whole debate on tackle.. Bread as bait and I use a 14ft carp float rod, 4lb line and a size 12-14 hook. Waggler float set up, most of the shot near the float, as with experience the bigger fish take the bait on the drop, not stationary in the water (have to be able to see the bait for this, chose your location wisely). The small hook means you can present the bread bait as a single offering. No sucking and blowing at the bait as mullet are inclined to do, they just eat it!
Fishing midget is right about fishing patrolling fish and it is my experience that there is no point in fishing at moving mullet, when they going somewhere the usually are not at all interested! (Only reason for the carp rod is I coarse fish, it’s not specially bought)

good spot in dungarvan is over by the park hotel - just down inside the wall opposite the hotel

havent been over that way recently but they always show here - guy at work fishes it regularly

Where about in the liffey did ya se them Cooke? Have seen loads up at the Eastlink bridge during the summer!

They were at the East link in the corner near the lock gates. As they acclimatise, they will run further up river and into the Dodder. These early fish tend not to be turned onto bread yet. It is worth a try though and save me having to travel south.

I had two fish in Wexford last week to 4lb 10oz.

I wont be able to do anyfishing for at least 3 weeks though which is a pain but hopefully i still have a chance of targeting them then! Might even try on the fly :) Does anyone know what strength fly rod you would need? would 6/7 be too light?

Had them to almost 4lbs on a 4 weight fly rod last year. It was some craic! The best part is I bought that fly rod on a whim from Lidl, rod reel and fly line all came to ~€40 I think. Did the business for me though:-)

At the time the mullet were feeding on maggots washed out from rotting weed at HW during those big springs last September. Came across them by chance one day out plugging for bass.

Thought it was a once off but started looking at venues with lots of rotting weed collected at the high water line and managed to target them quite successfully.

Tied some ethafoam flies on sz 14 nymph hooks and they worked a treat. Had more strikes when baited with a maggot or two. Casting 10 feet to the mullet; they didn't give a damn about me waving a fly rod around when they were on a feed like this

Hi Jonny,

Do you ever fish for them at ballycarry bridge, if so what tactics do you use? Was thinking of giving them a go on the fly rod but i'm not too keen on all that mud down there.

had one once at ballycarry and that was last year on the fly i was using a white egg fly...it not that bad on the whitehead side of the bridge thats where i fish for the mullet at low water cause the all get trapped on that side of the bridge but you have to be very sneaky not to spook them plus there is some crackin flounder there too, big bin lids is all i can say about them

I always fished the middle pool on the larne side for flounders. Found a few beads above the hook got them going using rag. which pool do you target the flounders? Sometimes the crabs there are a pain. Once got a cracking eel out of there as well.

i fish anywhere i can find a gulley at low water with a spinning rod or bass rod depending on the size of the gulley like the one that is at the train station on the larne side thats where i'd use the spinning rod. 3 hook flapper with maddies with a small blade no beads
