Time to Fly..?

Was thinking I want to start tying a fly about a foot up from my lures. Small sandeel pattern. Does anyone do this much and how well does it work.? Best way to do it..? Thinking its gotta be good for sea trout.

I think Deise Boy has tried that out Eoghan, not sure what success he has had though. I definitely think it would work and with the small fly being followed by your lure i think you have a good chance of a trout.

Yeah, I also fancy using a popper and a fly a foot after it but would need a weighted fly to sink and not trail in front of the popper. Could be good. Definitly going to try and rig one soon

Its a good technique E - remember though the 'fly' in this rig behaves differently than a fly thats cast at the end of a flyline and the presentation is different, hence fish are not neccessarily reacting to the fly in its isolation but rather the 'combo' presentation.

Often times its possible to 'tease' bass to a fly by using a hookless popper by fishing in pairs - this is a technique I use for golden grey mullet an requires a partneship - golden greys will activley follow small surface micro lures say like Lucky Craft bevy pencils - if you cast a fly then a friend tease's the GG's over or close to it then stop the lure and animate the fly - whammmooo....this only happens in a very short window mind..the same applies to bass but seatrout are different....see the danish techniques for Bombarda floatfishing etc...........

Tanks guys, done a good bit of reading up on it. Only prob I can see is casting a 7/9 ft leader? How necessary is it to be this long? Could you get away with shorter or does the float spook fish?

E a lot of my Danish customers fish this method, they tend to do so with longer softer rods to allow the longer leader and to facilitate a smoother cast. You Do not want to create tumble between fly and float else it ends in a mess - some flies travel better than others some material and bs's work better too

The float at times attracts fish and can of course spook them too

Danish fish on the coast behave differently than Irish fish but at times things are remarkably similar too

Largely a lot of experimentation frustration and fun - enjoy!

The setup I used for sea trout is a 12 ft rod course quiver tip, semi-sinking bombarda , braid main line and 9ft leader. It works really well for me anyway and you can see the takes on the quiver tip, but a bad cast practically guarantees I'll be picking knots out of the leader so give me a standard fly rod or lure rod setup any day

Couldnt agree more but its simply down to time. I dont get to fish that often and when I do I dont allocate enough/any time to perfecting my very bad fly cast, as I see others catching fish around me. Inevitably I put the fly rod down and move to the spinning rod to get amongst the fish which on many of the marks I fish require a bit of distance. Now I know this distance is in reach of a good fly fisherman but there in is the vicious circle..!

I dont live near the sea so standing in the green in fron of our house with a fly rod would look a bit odd.
Im in Kerry in a few weeks time and in between the best times to catch fish I am going to try again. There is one mark where sea trout run very clsoe to shore, big fish at that, so It might be well worth a go.

I have also used a small sp worm with small hook tied about 1ft from main soft plastic.
Works to. You be surprised how well sometimes as they snap at everything

Sounds good. I was also thinking of trying a small 1oz weight and about 3ft of flouro to a light fly. Bumping the weight and allowing the fly to then float back down through the water for a few seconds then maybe slow retrieve along the bottom for a few seconds before bumping again. Might work great too with a SG shrimp.

That's what I used the savage gear 3d shrimp.

Try also a diving fly with a very small hook attached to the from of top water plug.
Looks savage in the water. Very real
