Lads,
has anyone got tips on the best way to change the colour of a lure (apart from buying a new one in the colour i want!!)
Would nail varnish be a good bet???
Want to change a few lures to pearl/white - and dont want to spend too long looking around the cosmetics counter of boots (unless the shop assistant is good looking!)

I've been making my own homemade muskie baits since I was 13. Bass wood is by far the best wood to start off with, especially if you are making top water or a shallow crank bait. For jerk baits I usually use a more dense wood like oak. I've found balsa to be too soft but thats me I guess. Sealing the wood is a must before any paint goes on and I would also add if you cut your own wood soak the wood in antifreeze for a few days and let it dry for about a month before you start carving. Soaking the wood in antifreeze draws all of the moisture out of the wood and prevents cracking. A good coat of primer is very important when it comes to painting. A good filling primer works the best and gives an even surface to paint. After I primer my baits I sand them lightly to get a little bit of a rough surface so the paint sticks better. I use regular acrylic water based paints because they are really easy to clean up in my airbrush and if you screw up you don't have to scrap the bait. Envirotex lite is a good clear coat but not the best. It is heavy and can get really thick. I prefer car clear coat. It is expensive but VERY VERY HARD when it dries and not as thick as envirotex. It still gives an amazing shine though. Use as long of screw eyes you can get or make the bait through wire construction.
Deep diving crank baits can be a little bit tricky, especially if you are using them for trolling and making your own lips. I make my lips out of 1/4" lexan. It takes a very careful eye to place a lip just right to get them to run straight at 5+mph and make sure you have the components beefed up a bit. When a fish grabs a bait going that fast it puts a lot of stress on the bait.
I'll try to post some pictures of some of my baits in the next few weeks. The fish I posted is the first muskie I ever caught on one of my homemade baits. It was the first cast with the bait and the fish is 42".
Found this on a forum hope it helps
