Just watched the videos again and was thinking about the clip/no clip argument and thought that maybe the trout where turning away because of the camera?

think you're right there M - they all look a little 'edgy' to me - plus I think the retrieve (whilst it does get a desired effect) is not a 'human' retrieve me thinks!

I'd be like JimC; while using soft plastics I never use a link, just tied straight to the lure. While using plugs, which I seem do be doing less of year after year, I use a JB or Delande clip. I used to use a rapala knot and to be honest, when you get used to tying them, the change over can be quite quick. However, I see no difference between the two methods - it probably does boil down to confidence.

I never use clips when using plugs as they can radically change the action of the lure. Due to habit I apply the same to Xlayers , Slugos or other rubber lures. I doubt that a small clip would affect the action of these lures.
A good quality fluorocarbon leader is a must when lure fishing if the water is very clear.

I'm asking myself a question - right up to and over the close of commercial fishing for bass in Ireland in fact until about 1999 and maybe as late as 2002. I fished for bass with an Abu krill or Toby or sometimes an Abu Hilo then a rapala J11 then the first 'modern lure' I ever fished with was a lucky craft flash minnow just post millennium.
I think the ABU gear came with a pre loaded swivel attached - all of them are very visually different but we credit each of them as more advanced in relation to perceived Simulated reality.
Excluding the soft bait presentation advantage in the modern bass lure fishers armoury can we honestly say that a clip makes that much difference - I know of a very successful bass fisherman - dexter wedge with rubber eel attached on 20lbs mono - he does very well with a big fat brown swivel and clip...

Thats a good point Jim, I used them myself. They were called abu coasters I believe and they had a large swivel attached. Sure the Kilty lure I am such a fan of has similar and I have done very well on this lure.
I guess what I getting at is would the absence of this clip result in more fish. Hard to quantify really. Although there will be four of us fishing together in a few weeks in Kerry, be interesting to see if my choice make any difference in numbers over the other guys.
I am more inclined to leave this clip off with a soft plastic than with a conventional metal type lure.

I think you need to get out fishing ASAP Eoghan, you've obviously found the winter tough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was due to hit the same marks this weekend, but did my back in so had to cancel. Who'd have thought mixed foresomes was such a dangerous bloody game.....
Anyway, ignore me, I'm just jealous. When you're back from heaven/Kerry we'll hook up and head to that local spot we were chatting about, should be firing by then.

Agree the lure looks like it's getting a tow.
Have had a few hits on the old condor bar(German sprat) and it has a great big swivel
