is this enough to hold a 175, only going to use it in settled weather?

Personnally I wouldn't fancy it you be amazed with the volume of your boat on water what it can lift..!!I used a 600 kg train wheel for mine just for the piece of mind..... Is it a standard car tyre

You definatly need more than that. Concrete effectivly looses 1/2 its weight in water. Even if you boat cant lift that weight it will drag. Couple it with a plough anchor and some heavy chain and it should be ok then. Alternativly a few of them coupled together. Wouldn't risk a nice 175 on a lump of concrete inside an old tyre. there is a guy on donedeal selling mooring blocks have a look at them i made a set for a buddy of mine same shape as them with shuttering ply dug them in the sand at low water put on for and aft on a 24 ft boat never moved in rough weather last year there still as good as new

No mate don't chance it,mine was put down in a tractor tyre never mind a car tyre...

Mine was a lorry tyre.... make sure you have loads of chain...

thanks for those replies, the first thing about any job is having
someone to blame if it goes wrong , was hoping to find someone here

i know the huge dolphin watch boat is held by tractor tyres filled with concrete,
the theory is they sink into the silt and it's like a quicksand effect that holds,
hence the larger surface area and shape of the concrete may be better than say iron,

i think the tractor tyre would be overkill for a trailerable boat if it holds very big vessels,
because the slip is tidal im only planning to use the car tyre occasionally, not a permanent mooring

Well it certainly won't be permanent if your boat is on it

For me I would rather over engineer a solution than underengineer it.

You can get teh suction affect but it must be very smooth (tough plastic bag on base when pouring concrete) and you need the base slightly concave. If you have that it should give you about 25% more holding power than your car tyre.... would still be risky in my opinion. But a lot depends on your area and the ground you will put it in. If I were you I would talk to a diver that inspects them in that area, he will tell you if its suitable or not and he is the only one who can visibly see.
