hi grady,
a pirk baited with mackerel can be very good for them, not sure if its the
pirk itself or the fact it gets the bait down quickly and keeps it close to the
bottom where they are feeding. I ve also seen a muppet rig baited with
mackerel out fish all others for ling, dont know if colour makes any difference

thanks JW i'll try something also i'v seen in someones reports that wee light that anglers useing on rod tips or floats at night was attached on line near the hook wonder would that work or just single hook good baited with mackerel is enough, heading to donegal next sunday and the marks that we fishing holds plenty of lings down there so looking for info what's the best way to catch some on drifting boat

i tried all sorts of stuff, luminous tubing, tip lights, blades etc and i sometimes wonder
is any of it better than a bare hook with mackerel
the main thing is to use a heavy enough lead and get to the bottom quicker
than the guy beside you

and keep there, too much crap on the rig can slow
it down or make it kite a bit in the tide

i think you right John, is nothing beter that good strip of mackerel so that'll do me thank you John

Up here in the north of Scotland clattering spoons or flutter spoons will outfish plain mackerel baits every time.
Work well for the Irish conger too -

I have been fortunate to have trace advice from Mick on several occasions and he has yet to see me wrong. Used a combination of some of his patterns and Shamrocks bleeding glowworms in the All Ireland open boat a month or two back, put 4 internationals to the sword on my boat and missed out on the title on countback

presumably theres no one solution, for example in competition fishing
you are trying to do the opposite of what someone fishing for the table is doing,
so you might need a different technique? also, depth of
water might make a big difference. for example what i find the best
for catching pollack on the clare coast would not get a single fish
at kilmore quay and vica versa
Thu Sep 02, 2010 3:57 pm
thats because theres no 60lb pollock left in kilmore jw

here is some pics of the rig i was on about a nice sliver of mackeral and the ling is yours

a big clap on the back for that man dont think i know anybody else that has a rig named after him

is that where all that shamrock gear appeared from when you were fishing in kilmore earlier in the year

well done
