What fish can i catch around Carraroe??

Tue May 19, 2009 10:27 pm

Hi all, i've just returned from a trip to Galway. Had a great time, accept for the weather!! I recently purchased a small boat. I am delighted with it!

Anyway, i spent my time fishing out of Rossaveal and around the coast of Carraroe. I didnt venture to far as it was a bit choppy! And i dont have to much experience.

I caught 7 mackeral, but my question is.. What else can i catch in this area except from mackeral and pollock!! And where would i catch different species and what methods do i need to apply?

Thanks guys.

right, im not a boat angler but ill answer the best i can.

what sort of size is your boat and what range does it have?

in the bay around rossaveal it would be good to find a patch of sand using your sounder and this should throw up ray, doggies, huss and maybe a few other species such as flounder and maybe other flatties.

if you find a small reef or rocky outcrop, it should hold conger, wrasse, pollack and maybe the odd cod.

the only exact spot i can help you out with is just off the lighthouse on the right hand side of the bay as you face toward the aran islands. anchoring here should produce ray and huss to fish baits like mackeral and squid, and should also produce a few flatties if you have some lug, rag or crab.

Hope this is of some help.

Alex.

Thanks very much Alex, i know the spot your on about! I'll give it a go next time. The boat and engine are capable of getting me to the Aran islands, so that shouldnt be a problem. Must get myself a decent fish finder so, ask a silly question but, does a fish finder need to be fitted to the underside of the boat? Cheers, Joe.

thats grand so, that opens up a few other options in the way of marks.

theres the north shore at spiddal/inverin. a good spot is about 150-200 yards off the coast where the aran islands airport is in inverin. here there is any number of wrasse up to about 4-5lbs, some pretty decent pollack around 8-12lbs and all your usual rough ground species.

my advice would be to go to the marine supplies shop in galway and get an depth chart for the bay. this, coupled with a good fishfinder will make it much easier to find new reefs and sandbanks.

As far as rigs go, i normally use a standard 3 hook flapper with a few beads and whatnot when fishing over reefs and a sliding ledger when fishing over sand. i sometimes add spoons and shiny things if im after flatties. a storm shad on a light spinning rod also works wonders for pollack when its not too deep.

sorry, i have no idea about the fishfinder. maybe one of the other lads will be able to answer that?
