fish finder

Hi all
can anyone recommend a good fish finder .There was a humming bird on the boat when i bought it .It seems fairly old and shows up alot of fish that are not there .Are they all like this or are the newer ones better

I've always found that they show fish that are not there and don't show them when you are catching!

the garmin 160 is spot on you can get them on ebay for 40 odd quid or else you can try http://www.gulfstreamshop.com/Categorie ... egoryID=97 i have one and it very easy to use
and works very well

“Fish Finder” is somewhat of a misnomer, “sounder” is probably better!
When fish symbols are turned on, basically anything not connected to the bottom is interpreted as a fish. You would be better off to turn off the fish symbols. It is more important to get to know the bottom type from your finder – thick echo hard bottom, thin echo soft bottom etc.
You will see fish as returns that are off the bottom, bear in mind that this could also be weed, thermoclines etc. Over time you will get used to the marks you fish and will interpret your screen better. Failing that most of the Garmins are good. Go for colour if your budget allows. I haven’t used but am hearing good things from the Lowrance HDS units. Go for a dual frequency unit if you can.

I had a Garmin 550 and it was excellent. this unit has a plotter and sounder both are colour with a built in map of IRL/eng and they are very accurate. might be out of your price range but in my humble opinion there worth it.

I have a Raymarine unit and find it excellent. I have the DS500X. These are no longer in production and can be picked up very cheaply in the US on discount. Might be worth a look. The 400X is a smaller unit and used the same technology. This unit can be picked up for a song at the moment. I've seen a few of the Garmin units and again these also look like an excellent unit.
