List of native and introduced Freshwater fish in ireland

some of these i have never heard of but they must be some where in ireland, a lot of these have a english name as well as a irish name and some i did not think you would get in fresh water

Chub adding this because they have been caught in the River Inny,the River Inny flows from Lough Sheelin in County Cavan and heads south to Lough Derravaragh. From there is flows westwards to the River Shannon, which it joins at Lough Ree.so any of these could have chub in them,http://www.cfb.ie/fisheries_research/biodiversity/chub.htm

http://www.fishbase.org has barbel native to ireland,if anyone has ever caught one in ireland let me know

Those are very interesting - where are barbel native to?

Secondly, I know that there are chub in the shannon system - introduced.

There was also rumours that steelheads and other salmon species were released into one particular land locked lake for research purposes and that some may still be there...

Yeah i was wondering that myself? Be nice if there was somewhere in Ireland to target them...but i dont hink there is :(

I must admit I'm a little puzzled by Barbel being on that list, I've never seen or heard of them being caught over here. That said I've heard of Gudgeon being mistaken for small Barbel once or twice.

As Kieran pointed out Chub are missing from that list. I believe they were illegally stocked into the Inny a few years ago and have apparently now spread to the Shannon system. I think the Fisheries Board tried to indicate them but I think at this stage they are here to stay.

Yeah the chub were introduced by accident from visiting anglers using them as live bait for Pike :? Two illegal activities there :roll: On the plus side i wouldn't mind catching a chub :wink:

There is steelhead up the muster blackwater mostly because of the fish farm up the araglin river which is were I learn to fish and because of the rainbows all the native brownies have disspeared :x :x :x :x :x :x

did see on tv one time some program about chub in some river in sligo ,maybe others on the site might know

i heard about the steelheads and other salmon species,i am surprised that there are not any gold fish in the rivers and lakes,i remember about 20 years ago seeing gold fish in a pond outside a house,the pond was fed by a mountain stream which later ran to the corrib ,the gold fish were big,about 5 or 6 inch long

i saw on tv, that gold fish change colour back to a more natural brown once released into the wild, relation of the carp family if i remember........
