Short Range Certificate (VHF Radio Licence)

Hi all,

as a licensed radio ham here in Inishowen I have had a few people email asking me where they can do there VHF Radio test for the marine band

The SRC Module 1 & Module 2 are been taken at the BIM Fishery College in Greencastle, Donegal on the 18th March 2008.

Its a 2 day coarse for module 1 or 3 day if doing the 2 modules.
The Cost is €100 for Module 1 or €175 for both.

You will need to book your place at the college to attend and they will need a €50 Deposit.

A little far for me to travel, but will be looking for the same course in Dublin soon, so if anyone know where and when there are some VHF coarses being held soon, please let me know.

I got mine through a crowd in Bray (who were brilliant)....held in Motor club in Dun L.....

or you can join the Civil Defense and have it paid for! 8)

Don't forget that completing this course only entitles you to use a Marine radio....
(Its a Certificate of Competency).

If you own a boat, you then need to apply for a 'Ships Licence'. Its another €100 and the form can be downloaded from the Dept. of Transport website.
When you receive this, you get your 'callsign' and MMSI number for the radio/vessel. These are vital, as during any contact with the Coastguard, they will most likely ask you for your callsign.
They retain a database of all your details, so if you get into difficulty or send a DSC distress message, they can identify you immediately - name, address, vessel type, etc. etc.

The BIM road unit will be in Howth some time around April.

I spoke with Declan today...Following is his proposal..
Course to be run Tues,Wed,Thurs,Mon,Tues,Wed next week and following week 3 Hours per Night Module 1 + 2
Cost is € 175 per person.
We need a maximum of six people
Could I have some names asap as I need to phone Declan on Monday 23rd .

I would agree to a point. I hold a class A lisence in Amateur Radio and Only done the one exam when I had covered the course. Nowdays there are three modules to do before your can gain a full lisence. The craic on radio is generally to see who and where you can contact and some do it to collect cards while others do it to get certificates for covering all aspects of requirements like all states in USA, that is why the CQ CQ call is used to see if anyone is on a specific wave length. You are using all wave bands not just 2mtre which is restricted to that one band and if you want to go a great distance you have to use one or possibly 2 repeaters. Off course there are a few you must keep away from i.e. emergency services, aircraft etc. however if my memory serves me right if my call sign was say GB1SEA to use as marine it would be MGB1SEAM. M at front is for marine and M at end is for mobile. Due to family reasons I haven't renewed my lisence for 3 years so I cn't be exactly sure as it may be possible I have to drop maybe the G or GB prefix.
