you are trying to do the opposite of what someone fishing for the table is doing,

at kilmore quay and vica versa

Good point there John. Holds up for a lot of angling. Even the type of competition makes a difference. On your average charter boat comp anglers have to take what they get, where the skipper puts them, in terms of ground and area to fish. Every angler is trying to hoover up as many fish out of the area as quickly as possible. Put some of these guys on a good wreck and they stand a chance of losing the first big fish they will contact - Not geared up for it!

Nice looking rig Mick – wouldn’t fancy a good ling on a 2/0 though!

I'd make a conflicting point in that I have a range of perhaps less than a dozen traces that I can, when required, reach into and pull out a specific pattern, bait it and fish it in a specific way and catch a specific species.... I dont carry any more than that and they serve me well from one end of the country to the other. Having seen some incredible fish caught on lighter tackle at first hand, both by myself and by others, it has to be borne in mind that a match angler, regardless as to the size of the fish, is clued in to doing his absolute utmost to land whatever size of fish takes a notion to his bait. I am a firm believer that a good grounding in competitive angling serves you very very well for all facets of the sport. As for the Pollack in Clare and Pollack at Kilmore example, surely a properly fished gilling trace is going to be best? The only difference being I might opt for a slight increase in BS for Clare as the fish run bigger, the trace itself stays the same. Hooks, length, knots used etc.

we have colin barnes booked for 12/9, weather permitting, will be fishing
in over 100 meters with quite a big tide running trying for specimen ling, id say the techniques
for this job would not be remotely similar to say a shallow water charter
competition, lead pattern, rig etc might be totally different for the different jobs,
there's no reason to assume what works for one works for the other

Fishing for big ling (specimens) different story. You would be going down to a one hook rig. But the same principal rig enlarged would be able to handle such a fish. General reef fishing catching ling to ten pounds or so would be ideal

of a fine 26lb specimen in this months sea angler caught off
mayo on baited mupper rig. the other thing is to keep plently
of fresh bloody mackerel meat on the hooks which im sure you know anyway

i think these little spinners made since, looks well atracting the fish even wrasse woun't pass through, but in some options i would use bit bigger hooks specialy on drift when fish has no much time to swallow bait deeper as ancored boat would give you few seconds for it, we all know that ling cod pollack wount wast its time to have easy meal, but totaly they worked well, so that is idie to atract fish and size of hooks could be selected by situation well that my own thing
