2005 Mariner 90hp 2 stroke outboard

Some advice please, i am looking at a boat with the above engine, which is running 105hrs, im looking some advice on the engine, namely:

1. Is it a reliable engine;
2. Would it be very thirsty.

Anyone with any knowledge or experience of this type of engine, your advice would be helpful.

2 strokes are generaly thirsty beasts not just petrol but the 2 stroke oil as well.mine is a 115hp suzuki she costs about 60 euros per days fishing thats pushing her hard most of the day shes on a 21 ft doing 20 knots so she would be useing juice.
my advice would be to get a marine mechanic to test the engine before buying.for compression and any other pit falls.my costs are based on last summers fuel price of 130 per litre

She is on a 5.5m rib. My last engine was a 30hp tohatsu 4 stroke which was a dream to run. But im moving up in boat class so obvious the more expensive the engine will be to run, but i dont want to buy rubbish.

as far as i know mariner are the same as mercury and are a good engine once theyve been looked after.

The fact that it came off a rib would be a bit worrying.
Them rib boys are not known for driving around a 15-20 knots
As said above get a service agent to give a good looking over.

iv a mariner 40hp never given me any problems,good reliable engine,have it three years now, i find her not to bad on juice,but the bigger the engine the thursdier they are,,, and as donal said above specially with an engine you dont no,always get it checked out....

Mariner 75& 90 hp are very reliable,and not that thirsty if driven sensibly.
The most important thing is to get it serviced once a year regardless of usage and use use a good quality 2-stroke oil.

Mariner/Mercury stopped making engines many years ago. Chances are that it`s a "badged" Tohatsu. Super engine and totally bulletproof .

Do Tohatsu do the blocks for the larger engines? I though they stopped at 15Hp?

Tohatsu two stroke started at 2.5 and work up to 140 hp .
They make the four stroke up to 25 hp and then the TLDI up to 120.
I have heard that they launched a 120 four stroke.
The TLDI (Two stroke,Low pressure,Direct Injection) is basically a two stroke engine fitted with the injection and small supercharger system.Totally cracking machine)
If you find a Tohatsu I would gladly look it over for you ,don`t be afraid if it`s been ragged because the Tohatsu engine actually benefits from hard work and been run flat out for prolonged periods. The whole secret with Tohatsu is servicing and the correct two stroke oil (TCW3).

Thanks for the info... I was aware of the Tohatsu range & have considered them before ... Have a little 5hp myself.

They have been making the smaller blocks for Mercury Nissan and Yamaha (I think) for years.

I didn't think they made the blocks for other manufactures at above 15hp.

I'd say the 2005 is more than likely the Yamaha powerhead. A great engine.

Is the engine carrbed or EFI? I would have thought a 2005 would be EFI.

There is a known issue with these engines, with the Yamaha powerhead, with a grommet under the powerhead. It can in some cases cause overheating.

Incidentally Mercury finished their deal with Yamaha around 2006 (At least on the big powerheads) The Mariner/Merc powerhead from 2007 on is for all intents and purposes a Verado powerhead without the supercharger.
