Can you help the RNLI with feedback on SEA Check please

Tue Aug 03, 2010 11:16 am

The RNLI offers safety advice to boat owners as part of it’s Prevention Programme, and tries to help boat owners avoid incidents on the water.

As part of the ongoing improvement process, we are trying to establish if there are reasons why people do not avail of some of the services we offer.

To help us improve what we do and ensure that our programmes continue to be relevant to boat owners, we would appreciate if you would take a few moments of your time to answer the following questions.

1. Have you had an RNLI SEA Check?

2. If not, have you previously heard of RNLI SEA Check?

3. If you have heard of SEA Check but not had one, what has prevented you from using the service
?

All feed back will be taken into account, but all comments will go into the review anonymously - so please be as open and frank as possible with your answers - if you would rather your answer was not public, please feel free to answer via PM.

On behalf of the RNLI, thank you very much for your time.

In the meantime if anyone would like to arrange a SEA Check, please let me know the location of your boat and I will PM the contact details of your nearest LSSO.

Hi Guys,

Its the least we can do to reply on this as you give all sea-users so much.

I have had safety check done twice - 2002 and 2006 .

The reason I had it done is that our club insisted it be done to enter our boat into small boat competitions. It was extremely useful and I got some fantastic advice. It also made me check all the important things which we can overlook sometimes .

I havent had it done of late partly through laziness and partly as club dont organise many small boat comps these days.I am confident that I have all requirements however so would be delighted to meet up and get it done .I am in Glenageary and launch a lot out of Bulloch and Dunlaoghaire.

I think you will find that the reduction in small boat competitions due to the move to charter has led to clubs taking pressure off and less pre organised check locations.I would suggest you might get a good response if you advertise some boat check locations on here .Name the date and time based on feedback from survey and should be a good response.

Many thanks for all your hard work.

1: No
2: Yes
3: Toyed with getting a few boats together for an article but have not got around to it yet. Was thinking of getting somebody from the RNLI down on practice day of the small boats festival but reckon the competitors really just want to get fishing. Also these guys are well kitted out and are safety conscious. I reckon if I was on a marina I would have it done long ago. I don’t know if they do house calls for the launch and retrieve people!

I suppose the question here is how do you get the two boats that I saw on Saturday interested…. One towing the other and ended up with the two broken down… couldn’t start an aux engine (did not know how I reckon)… at least they were wearing lifejackets and were close to land! Or maybe the four big men wallowing around the harbour on Thurs night in a 2.9m dinghy with a 2.5hp motor. Maybe they were fine but it didn’t look safe to me!

In the past I have spoken to Crosshaven RNLI about Sea Check and reckon it is a brilliant service and everybody should have it done.

1. No.
2. Yes.
3. Boat refurb/outfit not yet finished. No point in calling out you guys just to tell us something that we already know about but haven't gotten around to sorting yet. Better to finish the job and then get the once-over.
