Very belated I know!

I was over there in August 2005 for a couple of weeks visiting one of the lads who was working over there.

Suffice it to say, in the period post hangover and pre drinking there isn't a whole lot to do in OC. One night one of the lads returned from "entertaining" a lass with 2 rods he swiped from her porch. Now I don't condone this sort of behavior but it was an opportunity to get some fishing in  .

Theres a tackle shop on the main st and He sorted me. Tackle was standard, short bodied, 2 hook traces with short snoods. Circle hooks were the order of the day and 1 or 2oz weights.

Bait was a long strip of skinned squid flesh (much meatier than what we have here) hooked once at one end and let dangle down below the hook and a small bait fish hooked once through the eye and let dangle too.

Your man directed us to just below the main bridge into town (you'll know it if you're there). Quarry was bass but we didn't get any. We did get a large number of "flounder" (see the pic below). These bit and fought like hyper powered mackerel and were absolutely brilliant.

We also caught a large number of snapper crab which were really aggro when caught, with massive claws. These cost $5 a piece in the shops. One evening we kept 20 crab and had a massive BBQ. $100 worth of grub gratis in a couple of hours. Deadly!

If anyone is heading over that neck of the woods its well worth doing some fishing. Great way to spend an afternoon.

Yeah I saw those guys Paul. We had fairly limited gear so the place we were directed to was our best bet. Wooden decking out the back of a liquor store to fish from and a cast of only 20 yards!
You're right about the size limit too but I'd say 75% of the fish we caught were over that size. Crazy little feckers with massive mouths and razor sharp teeth. I was told they made great eating but the digs we were in didn't really lend themselves to gutting, filleting and cooking fish.
