Not personally, but there was an article about a recent clamp-down by customs on stuff imported into the country (not fishing gear specifically).

I think the article was in the Irish Times on 22nd January.

Mail order from anywhere outside of the EU is a little bit of a lottery....sometimes the stuff will get through without any duty or Vat other times if your unlucky it wont.

This is the situation though......if you buy an item for $100.00 and the postage/Freight charges are say $50.00 then the duty and Vat is to be paid on $150.00....not just the price of the item.....what may look a good deal can sometimes cost more.

We get someone traveling over on business to bring it over after its posted to a US address. One tactic is have the package undervalued by the seller but if the package is lost insurance only covers the value stated.

A work mate gets smokes mail ordered regularly and finds that one in 3 packages are stopped. I've heard others quote this statistic.
