Pollock and chips

I was just reading a report from a survey the food safety authority comissioned into fish products being mislabled. See below
111 Products surveyed
19% OF PRODUCTS SURVEYED WERE MISLABLED
17 out of 21 Cod products were actually Pollock or Smelt
Laziness or cost cutting?
Would anybody know the difference anyway??

Cod type fish such as haddock, pollock and the like from the ocean is ok to eat... but catfish from Vietnam?????

I thought it was only in the UK until I was at the Chinese wholesalers in Cork and saw pangasius frozen... I've never seen that on the menu so can only imagine where its used!!

smoked coalie being sold as cod has been going on for donkeys years still tastey though bit queezy about the amount of dye they put on it to give it a more smoked colour, have had pangasius before found it tastey

I think they know what they are at! Selling cheaper fish off as cod and raking in the profits!

Like yourself, tho, I always preferred it to greasy cod. There's a chipper at Killala Harbour who does superb pollock and chips, he says the secret is deep frying in beef dripping not oil. An' here's me thinkin Cholesterol was a townland near Ballina...

Dont think its laziness or confusion of any sort. I find pollack on its own just done fresh is an ok fish to eat, not bad done in batter, I think cod is a bit better but a friend of mine much prefers pollack.

I had a brilliant Thai curry with monk fish and tiger prawns in a restaraunt about 6 months ago, amazing. Had it again on Sunday, this time it had monkfish, tiger prawns AND pollack in it, and it was every bit as good, pollack a great fish for a curry. Theres no doubt in my mind that was pollack in it, for all I know the restaraunt bought it as cod but the texture of pollack is pretty distinctive.

Na theyre just maximising profit, maybe they cant get enough cod to meet demand and they just use pollack as a substitute.

Google "pangasius fish" you willl never eat it again.....Mekong river is one of the most polluted in the world.They also use female(human) growth hormone to breed them!

they have fresh oysters in the restaurant too...... bloody tastey! hope you had a few of them 'n all

Crap, was served this in a restaurant recently, ordered it out of ignorance and not having ever seeing it on a menu before I actually thought that it was a cover name for Pollock, googled it but obviously spelt it wrong because nothing of what i just read came up lesson learnt

chippers in belfast have been at it for years now. 90% of people would'nt know the difference but still harp on about cod and haddock being the only nice fish they would eat in batter. oh how little do they know

anybody that buys "cod" and chips for 5.50 and thinks there getting cod is seriously kidding themselves...cod is selling for 11 euros a kilo at the moment! theres no way a chipper can sell cod at that price and make a profit.

dont think i will opt for pangasius again you could wake up with wobbly bits were you never had wobbly bits before

Basa fish is on that list, I bought fish in a box which i thought was Cod ,at the side of the box in tiny writing was Basa never again.
