no limit man other than their overall quotas which by the way the french never adhere to.french trawlers regularly smash their quotas, pay the ridiculously small fines and profit hugely.this goes on year in year out with the EU turning a blind eye as it seems their ultimate goal is to have france be europes main and maybe eventually only real fishing port/nation.

Usually for French vessels its the 12 mile limit but certain vessels from their fleet do have limited access to our 6 to 12 mile zone. 6 miles into the baselines is open to Irish and northern Irish.

Just to provide an update to this thread.
The EU regulation 2371 of 2002 permits certain Countries (which have delared traditional rights) into areas between the 12nm to the 6nm. This legislation came into force in 2003 and is due to run out in 2012.
With reference to our coast line the following countries can fish inside the 12nm for certain species of fish and shellfish,
France, UK, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
Each of the above Countries are restricted in what they catch and where they can catch it.
For example, France has the best access inside the Irish 12mn zone as they can catch the following in the areas below.
Erris head North west to Sybil point West ---- all demersal species and Nephrops (Dublin bay prawns)
Mizen head south to Stags south ----all demersal species and Nephrops and Mackerel
Stags south to Cork south----all demersal species, Nephrops, Mackerel and Herring
Cork south to Carnsore point south----All species
Carnsore point south to Haulbowline south east (Carlingford Lough)----All species except shellfish.
Germany and the Netherlands can only catch Herring and Mackerel whereas the UK and Belgium can go for all demersal species.
Just as a final point, Ireland has virtually no access to the above countries waters, so when you drink you next glass of milk think of what Ireland swapped out in the way of fish so we could reduce the milk lakes, beef mountains etc.

How close can trawlers then come to our shoreline? I was fishing North Beach Greystones last Friday and there was a trawler there all day. At first I thought it was connected to the building of the Marina but as the day went on I became convinced it was a trawler. It was so close that I could see the lads moving around on board in their Hi Vis jackets. Is there a URL in existence that we can go to , to find out what it was and what it was fishing for??
With regards the Milk and Beef mountains, "For what died the sons of Roisin", Pure Greed IMHO. The EU saw us coming from a long way off....

how close a fishing vessel can come to the shoreline depends on its sea fishing licence.
A rough rule of thumb is that anything under 75 feet can fish up to the shore, anything over that usually means it cannot fish inside the three mile limit except if the vessel has an authorisation to fish inside the three mile limit.
Along the East Coast is interesting because mussel seed fishing is carried out in the summer. These vessels number about 20 and the largest is just under 50m. The vessels are licenced aquaculture vessels and are permitted to fish for seed mussel which appears on shallow banks and most of which are washed away as soon as the bad weather comes.
The East Coast also has a large shellfish fleet operating up and down the coast.
Whelk, Razorfish, Cockles and Clams are all found in the intertidal areas so the vessels will operate on high tides in these areas to catch the shellfish.
With regards an URL being in existance, I am not aware of any public site which you can access. The monitoring system for fishing vessels is changing and currently vessels over 18m must carry a box onboard that sends its position to a vessel monitoring centre. This is being changed to 15m vessels soon. There is another system which is AIS whereby the public can view a vessels position.
With regard to your sighting of a vessel off Greystones, I find it unusual that a fishing boat would be in the area as fishermen dont usually wear hi vis jackets and that Greystones is closed to commercial fishing at present as the harbour is being converted into a marina. would it be possible that the vessel was a safety boat? (fishing boats often work as safety boats when construction is going on at a pier)

I think you are correct Gilhooley,
If it was a red hulled Boat, I think she is the safety and work boat for the Marina build. I often see her when I am launching there.

I think it will be interesting to see what happens to the accession rights when it comes up again in 2010 along with the Common Fisheries Review which will probably result in us all having to fill in catch books on a daily basis!

I'll say one lads you know your regs and it is intresting reading my own personal feelings is that all comercial fishing should have a 12 mile limit. This would give fish stocks time to recover as we can see with the species that were protected for a while, now they want to give the trawlers permission to catch. Keep them out and we will be able to enjoy our leasure time and sport

Here is a pic of the vessel in question. Now that I look at the photo, maybe it was indeed connected to the development?
